5004A and 3970EP Saatchi edition

Collectibility has these two beauties listed. While I actually prefer the Eric Clapton style 12 o’clock breguet numerals of the 3970. Both are absolutely amazing references but trying to understand why they would not rather auction them off vs selling them low key on collectibility?

Always a tradeoff between visibility and transaction costs and the owner of these beauties apparently wants to minimize the latter.

The fees at auction are mind boggling. Outside of the EU I'd pay around USD 1.5 for a hammer price of USD 1 (hammer + some 25% premium + 19% VAT on (hammer + premium)) and the seller gets some USD 0.8 (hammer - some 20% commission / what they negotiated), so around 50% of my payment. Of course VAT is not specific to auctions but the real winner at auction is always the auction house.

Beautiful watches. I tried on the platinum a year ago, absolutely stunning watch. The size does take some getting used to.

My guess why not taking the auction route:

1) Market has been extremely soft and seller risks not getting to his desired sale price (couple this with the exorbitant fees too)
2) You can ask whatever price and hope a whale is happy to spend whatever.

Their price on the platinum is within 50k USD of the last one that sold at auction I’m aware of. Though the Phillips example had just been unsealed and sold in November 2022.

Interesting thanks for the details. Didn’t know is priced so accurately but makes sense I guess John Reardon knows what he is doing ;)

Do you happen to have a wrist shot of your wearing the 3970? Also is the 3970 at comparable to the 5205 in size ? I know officially it’s a 40mm but it does seem thick and small and i think 40mm is lug to lug if I’m not mistaken.

I can’t comment on comparison to 5205, but I do have photos :)

I agree, I have seen Phillips do this on a number of occasions. I believe it has something to do with importing the watch with exotic leathers. I bought one at one of their Geneva auctions and they had swapped out the oem band with their own Phillips band (was very ugly )

Yeah makes sense - I know that you can’t buy alligator straps and fur for that matter in California anymore.

I am so enamored by the 5004a. I had no idea this watch existed in steel.
Way outside of my price range but if I won the lotto, this would be my first purchase.
