Daytona Serial Question

I recently purchased an unworn 116509 Daytona that had some of the stickers still on it. The serial number starts with V which would indicate that it is a 2008-2009 watch however the warranty card shows it was sold originally in March 2012. By 2012 the serial numbers were random. Any thoughts on whether this is a watch that sat in the Jewelers safe for years or truly a random serial reference. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well V six number serials ran well into 2010 and gold Daytona not the fastest selling then, from the latter part of 2010 the random serials started these were mixture numbers letters in any order but now a total of eight digits.

Ooo, what an interesting question (not that I have any answers).

Entirely from internet-scraps that I've read, the gold Daytona was never a great seller, and by 2010 only the steel Daytona was wait-listed. So even with that beautiful dial, I wouldn't be surprised if that watch sat in a window for a year. Would love to see some concrete sales figures, but that'll never happen, I suppose.

I believe the date on the warranty paper shows time of sale

Correct however with the V serial it would indicate that the watch was manufactured in 2008 or 2009 however the warranty would begin in March 2012 when it was purchased. I figure it must have been at the AD for quite some time as when I found out that there is a clasp code as well, that code was from 2008.

I know it’s hard for people to believe but PM Daytonas were not hot sellers and readily available until around 2018-19. I have no doubts that OP’s watch could have spent some years in an AD’s stock before being sold.

First all internet charts INCLUDING CLASPS are just a approx date when the case or clasp was stamped, and not when it was made, and many serials overlap a year or so. And as I have already stated V serials ran well into 2010 possibly longer with slower sellers.

I hear you loud and clearly, however with a seven digit V serial number, PJ clasp code. What makes the most sense is 2008-2009 watch that was sold in March of 2012. Even if I am wrong, I don’t really care as I love the watch and am never selling it.

Thanks for your help!

I've seen random serial watches start with V and Z before. Could be that.

Yes it is WG. I was shocked to find one that was unworn with some stickers including the inner and outer box, warranty card, manual, microfiber cloth, green and white tags and bezel cover. Very lucky. Thanks.

That’s what I originally thought however I guess the random serials have 8 digits/letters and the non random are only 7 like mine. Thanks.

Very true hence my original question. Then again I knew they sold slowly but I never realized it could be years! Thanks.
