Taking a grail watch on vacation

I want to hear some stories on how you felt when you first took your grail watch, or any luxury watch, on vacation with you. Was it liberating or stressful?

I'm asking a different question than Is It Safe. I want to hear your personal experience. Please indicate the country and city to give context if it's helpful.

Done it many times. Enjoy it! Multiple countries in Europe. Many times in the carribeans, and few cruises. Don't remember what I took but most of the time it was a Pepsi, a PM Daytona, or SS Daytona.

Insure you watches and then enjoy them. Life is short.

^^^^ THIS ^^^^

I always take them. Honestly wouldn't even own them if I wasn't going to enjoy them.

This sure sounds like a “is it safe” thread but asked in a different manner.

Take a couple. Wouldn't want to regret taking a Calatrava to the beach or a Daytona to a nice dinner.

Taking a grail watch on vacation

The definition of grail watch is highly debatable on this forum. But let’s assume it’s a watch you love and managed to acquire.

I just took my GMT BLNR on a mini vacation to Clearwater / Tampa / St Petersburg, FL. It felt great. I wore it everywhere. It didn’t feel liberating or stressful. It just felt natural if that makes sense.

I do not travel with PP. I travel with Explorers I or ii. Last month Guatemala. It’s not stressful. I love traveling with watches.

I bring a nice watch like a steel rolex or omega but never anything I would have to be concerned about getting dinged or damaged.

To many things to focus on besides a watch.

My major destinations this year will be Las Vegas for a wedding, Austin for MotoGP, Durango CO for mountainbiking, and New York because I go every year. I will bring and wear at least a couple of Rolex watches depending on the length of my trip.
I will enjoy having them and as long as I don’t act stupid I expect to bring them home.
I bought them to be worn, used, and to be happy.

I've taken many a grail on vacation.

But two standout in my memory.

This one to the beach...

And this one to the track...

I took my first Rolex to over a dozen vacations all over - ranging from skiing in the mountains to diving in the Keys. But never took a wrist shot.

Too much work to bring more than one watch. Putting watches in the hotel safe just doesn’t feel secure to me.

So the one watch I’ll bring will be a go anywhere do anything watch. That cuts out leather strap watches. PM is generally out as well, I don’t like going to the pool, gym, beach with PM. I don’t have any issue bringing any SS Rolex (GMT, DJ, or Explorer).

I’ve frankly been thinking about an Explorer II as it really feels like a nice GODA watch

I normally wear my watches pretty much all the time. Last summer my Daytona came to Tenerife for 2 weeks and I’ve previously worn my SD4K in Hong Kong. We’ve got 3 weeks in Thailand this year and I’ll likely be wearing my latest “grail” AP Diver. After each vacation, I’ve always noticed new scratches but this isn’t something that concerns me for long if at all.

The above aside, when I was in London last summer I decided not to wear my Daytona due to concerns around theft.

Once a decision has been made to wear/take or not then I’m 100% relaxed. Ultimately my watches are all insured and purchased to be worn and enjoyed.

I typically wear a Submariner and don’t think about it (US, Central America, most of Europe, most of Asia).

I am going to Cape Town later in the year and will go Garmin. To generalize I’m keeping the Rolex home in much of South America and Africa.

Would not buy any watch if it was going to cause me any stress by wearing it anywhere in the world.

I was working in Aruba back in 2008 and we thought we'd be done with our work a day or two early, so it was the first time my wife traveled w/ me. Turned out we did have a couple days to enjoy the Island.

While relaxing on the beach I saw a guy wearing a 16710 and congratulated him on having the best travel watch in the world. The guy's face turned white with alarm as if I was stalking him as potential prey. He quickly moved on so fast he didn't notice I was wearing the exact same watch.

My Hulk was with me in Croatia, Omega in Turkey and Polar in Greece. No stress except for the beach volleyball match when, after drinking a few beers during the break, I gave my watch to a friend and forgot about it (I was already very tired). I was looking for it for two days before I found out that it was lying peacefully in a safe in a friend's hotel room...

I wore my daytona on spring break trip with the family. No problem at all except when the bell boy at the hotel lost his mind about it...

I wear a nice watch whenever we travel, so does my wife.

Part of the joy of owning a watch is wearing it on vacation IMHO

Always take them. There is no better way to bond with a watch than on vacation.

I have never once left my nice watch (TT Datejust for 30 years, pt. Daytona for the last 7 years) at home when I've gone skiing, traveled to Cancun, gone hiking, gone to Europe, etc.

Perhaps it's reading too much here, or perhaps the world has changed (significantly), but I might leave the Daytona at home if I went to certain places now.

I did have a "close call" in Paris (the same trip as this Lucerne picture) where a guy at Sacré-Coeur (super touristy place) tried to put a leather band on my wrist and I ripped it away and said "no thanks." I'm pretty sure he would have taken my Daytona in the next 3 seconds. Other than that, I've never had a problem.

We were really impressed with Lucerne. That’s where my last wrist shot is from (above) on our trip at Christmas

I also take around 3 watches and my wife the same. Too many destinations to mention but usually bring our favorites (Daytona, BLRO, BLNR etc). I also bring a Casioak but I wear that one because I don’t like flaunting expensive things when traveling to poorer destinations.

I use the hotel safe, ship safe with no worries. My watches are insured and my only concern is when bodily harm could be an issue (Casioak comes out for those).

As others have said I would rather sell my collection than not wear them, especially on vacation.

I take my watches everywhere. Honestly, vacations are where I enjoy my watches the most as they create amazing memories. I usually take just one that stays on my wrist the entire time and they are insured.
