The DJ41 Dilemma - Blue or Wimbeldon?

Hello everyone. So this is going to be my first Rolex. I'm quite certain it has to be a DJ41 (fluted with jubilee SS). I have been given an option to choose between the Wimbledon and the Blue. I wanted my first Rolex to be timeless and a piece I will never sell. Just FYI but I have no issues with the 9 marker or the slight legibility issues on the Wimbledon.

Quite split as I love both, however need you all to please help me decide.

*PS - Not sure if this should affect my buying decision but I already have a blue dial watch in my collection (Longines Avigation Bigeye - Blue Titanium)

Welcome to the forum! Had a dilemma as well as I wanted to order a 2nd DJ41. So in February I've ordered the Wimbledon fluted with jubilee SS. In my opinion, still the most beautiful DJ currently. But no matter which one you will order, you will love the classical DJ41! Enjoy the deciding process ))

The blue dial DJ is gorgeous. You can’t pass it up. It is one of the nicest blue dial watches on the market, especially with the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet.

I get that you already have a blue dial watch, but I’d imagine this won’t be your last watch. You can get another dial color next time.

By the way, I don’t dislike the Wimbledon dial, but I prefer that in two tone for some reason. Don’t ask me why. I just do.

Welcome to the forum

When I think of the classic/timeless DJ, I think of the two tone verison jubilee / flutted bezel.

In these two options, I’d go blue dial as I’m not a fan of Roman numerals mainly due to legibility.

Thanks! And congratulations on your stunning DJ41. How's the wearability of the wimbledon? Is it any different than the blue? I am the kind of guy who dresses up sporty/casually(polo-Ts, rolled up shirt sleeves) most of the times, even to work.

Absolutely agree with you on the blue dial. However, I would always want to own only one colour variant from a specific category(DJ41 in this case), which is why want it to be the best choice. The blue looks crazy good in all the images/videos I have seen online.

Also, while I get your point on the two tone and have seen many opt for TT over SS, I am someone who doesn't like yellow or rose gold on my wrist. They look fabulous, but I feel it would hamper my wearability and daily style.

I do not have my Wimbledon yet unfortunately, my AD said it could take some time. But with falling Swiss watch exports, I hope for a short waiting time:

The changes compared to the same months in the previous year: January 2024 (−4.6%), February 2024 (−3%), March 2024 (−5.4%).

It looks dramatic for China, our most important export market for our beautiful watches after the USA: minus 25.4% in February 2024 compared to February 2023.

And almost minus 20% for Hong Kong.

Of these two I would choose the blue. I prefer the silver or white dial though.

I absolutely love my blue dial DJ36. Depending on the lighting it takes on many different shades, and it can be worn with just about anything. Good luck in whichever you choose!

It came down to these very two for me … in the end I liked the Wimbledon better, and went with it.

The Wimbledon can be worn anywhere, from casual to formal / worn with anything … the Blue Dial less so, I think.

Already owning a Blue Dial watch would have made my decision automatic … Wimbledon.

Blue with stick dial is the way to go. Cleaner dial, classic combo.

Wimbledon all the way!! The dial is something special.

The Wimbledon was my first Rolex. At the time I had a choice of the Wimbledon or the Blue Stick dial
I choose from the AD.

Since you stated you have no problem with the two biggest Wimbledon issues, namely legibility and the nine marker, I'd say go with that. It's a beautiful watch and stands out from the crowded field of Datejust 41s. The blue is the "safer" choice, but I suspect you want the Wimbledon - so do it!

Definitely another vote for blue from me - it’s a perfect colour combo and the fact you already have a blue watch just means you like blue!

Personally, I really don’t like the Wimbledon dial - there are the issues you mention, I’m not a fan of Romans and I just don’t think it will age that well. Plus the blue is a classic which is ideal for a piece you never intend to sell.

I can't really explain it but due to some reason I like Wimbledon with smooth bezel more (tried it on at the AD).

I have the 41mm Wimbledon in TT and love it. That being said, only you can decide which one you like best. Don't let us talk you into something that you won't be happy with. I know, tough decision. You need to find an AD/grey market dealer where you can try both on and then decide which one speaks to you best.

For me, it's a no brainer for the blue dial.

I am one of the few who do not like the Wimbledon.

Blue for me. I tried the Wimbledon on last month, the dial is just "too busy" for my eye.

I went for the blue dial, smooth bezel and jubilee combo. A classic and versatile rolex with enough flashiness for my personal taste.

First, you can always get the dial changed during future service and it will not break your bank account.
Second, consider future Rolex pieces. A datejust is a stepping stone. You may want to add a bluesy or a yachtmaster 40, Should you prefer a variety of dial colors.
My 2 cents.
And congratulations.

It’s more interesting and you already have a blue dial

My first Rolex in 1984 was a SS Datejust with Jubilee/fluted bezel/blue dial. It’s a timeless classic, the Wimbledon does nothing for me.

Wimbledon is spectacular. Best dial you can get on a DJ.

Congrats in advance!

I saw that watch in person. The pictures don’t do it justice. It looks stunning in two tone with a fluted bezel, and jubilee bracelet.

I still prefer the blue if I’m going stainless steel.
