DD40 RG Olive Dial

After 2 years of waiting (not really since I forgot about putting my name down for it) my AD offered me a RG olive DD 40. I have always wanted this watched but never at the ridiculous secondary prices.

No discounts offered, and includes Taxes.

My question to the forum is - do I wait for more market softening because I remember a time when PM watches were way below MSRP

OR DO I bite the bullet and buy now from AD

I also think the model will be discontinued soon as it is on a 8 year run

If you’re on the list and you want the watch I’d just buy it already.

I look forward to the incoming

I would buy the watch. Short term market fluctuations happen but this is one that I would be surprised if it dips below msrp. Not taking into account the fact it could/will be discontinued at some, the price of all Rolex products only increase with time so you will be fine. Go for it.

If you want it buy the thing.

Shouldn’t be worrying about it going a grand or two under retail if you are buying a Day date. Worth it to get it from the AD.

If you knock it back now, it would come across to the dealer you were buying for the hype. Obviously, not a massive deal but could be a negative if looking for other bits later.

You had to wait two years for the watch but want a discount? I’m sure there are others behind you who have waited almost as long and are happy to pay MSRP.

I bought a yellow gold DD40 years ago for over 20 percent off but was more than happy to buy this watch at MSRP after a 15 month wait.

PM watches consistently going for over retail gray aren’t going to sink values that quickly (this one and meteorite GMT come to mind). Yes others are softening such as anything else white gold but even the blue sub has a wait list at my AD at MSRP.

Get it now because if it gets discontinued it’ll be painful to get it again grey.

Before the hype, I paid $31,000 for mine, brand new, grey dealer.
Those days are long gone.
Doubt you’ll see that again on this reference.
Get it now as no one knows what tomorrow holds.
In between while waiting, you missed out on a lot.

Now I gotta figure out if I am day date guy
Sometimes the watch wears you and the DD is such a work of art it’s a bit intimidating

after waiting 2 years you have a chance to buy it at msrp at an AD when it was 80k on the grey market not even 2 years ago. not sure what more you can ask for here

if you still like it i would buy it and not look back. it's an amazing piece

Helps if you’re looking in the future for those hard to get pieces. I purchased a DD and later was offered a Daytona.
Not saying that’s going to happen again but it sure may.

If I were offered this reference today, at retail, and I loved the watch I would pull the trigger - retail is what $41500? grey is trying to get $47-$55k so value isnt a concern (though it IS going to be cheaper as the global economy craters) - if you WANT the watch buy it.

That’s what I was thinking
Impending financial retraction these high ticket items will be available on the secondary market and with Rolex ramping up production the supply demand mismatch might be favorable for these high ticket items and I think we are seeing signs of it already
Soft secondary market
Increasing supply at the AD

Every Rolex fan is a DayDate “guy”or “gal”. Watches are not intimidating, except maybe the ones covered with jewels, ie: the rainbow Daytona.

It's a beautiful piece. Unless your taste in watches has changed a lot since putting your name down 2 years ago I would say go for it!

If the funds don't impact your lifestyle, I'd buy it without hesitation. Everything is subjective, of course, but this is my favorite Rolex in the catalogue.

It seems like if you really wanted the watch you could have just bought one grey for little to no premium. Have you tried one on? Maybe go in and see what you think. You’ll know then if it’s worth 45k or whatever. But I wouldn’t buy it thinking if Rolex discontinues it you’re going to make a bunch of money on it.

I tried on a chocolate dialed RG last week - dont do it unless you have your credit card handy - the dd in their RG is STUNNING on the wrist, if Oliver's hadnt had $47k on a really nice but not new one I would have bought it even though its not my first choice...I'd just go buy it what is it $41500? from an AD - Id take that gamble even if the economy craters - AD purchased piece in your name? hell yeah...

2 years ago when I put my name down i had tired the model in exhibition case and loved it but at that time a day date purchase didn’t jive with my life goals (had my second kid on the way and had bought a house)
When I got the call I tried it on and fell in love with it again

The price was always high for a day date regardless and it’s a big decision relatively in terms of purchasing
I’m in a financial place to get one where it won’t affect my lifestyle (no more student loans, and house is nearly paid off) one bit but will add motivation to work harder/smarter

I guess these type of questions on the forums is also asking for permission in a way
I asked my wife if I’m being reckless with my money by buying a 45k watch and she said not at all…I’m just here to vet my decision making because macroeconomics of the watch industry is indeed shifting

To be honest, I’m surprised the AD is giving you this much time. These types of watches usually come with a waiting list.

I turned this watch down two previous times—once in 2019 when I was still carrying two mortgages after moving and second in 2020 right when the world was shutting down. I told my AD I wouldn’t pass a third time.

I have a bad habit of not keeping watches at least five years but this one is a keeper!

You’ve been offered a stunning watch you asked for at MSRP .. and you’re asking a bunch of strangers whether you should buy it ?
To me your mind is made up, what answer are you looking for from everyone ?
Apart from Platinum DD, I don’t think there is a better one that what you’ve been offered ..
Fair enough if you don’t have the bags for it then pass, at that price only you can decide ..
