Exactly what would make you say they are probably fakes? A shelf stacker or a cashier at a movie theater can't have a Rolex, or any other nice watch?
You need to get a grip, these days anyone can have a watch of any kind. How they afford it is exactly none of your business.

I met a young guy at a Rolex event. Chatting with him and he works in the familt fruit shop. He was very humble, but I found out later his family owns one of the cities largest fruit wholesaling businesses as well as several retail shops. He was one of their best customers - he just bought a Sub for his brother (who I gathered was not too familiar with watches). Very hands-on family, so you may very well see him stacking shelves with fruit!

In contrast, I have a friend who works in IT sales... very flash, travels OS regularly for work, likes to go out and have big fancy dinners and orders expensive wine... and he was wearing a Hublot just brought back from an OS trip. When I asked to have a closer look, he 'fessed up that it was a copy bought in Thailand!!!

Just my experience on not judging...

here in Beaumont Texas they can be kind of scarce sometimes.

I guess people around here would rather spit dip and ride their horse than buy nice watches.

Well well....just woke up to see where this thread has headed....and am relieved to see it's petered out.....

I just wanted to suggest that it is 'stereotypes' that we need to watch...this is a fantastic place..that in itself actually runs against the stereotypical "Rolex" owner...the diversity of people, occupations, cultures, races, classes, and incomes [to name a few] here on TRF clearly demonstrates that.

Underneath "shelf stacker" is somebody. That somebody can have a Rolex...I do not find that surprising. And I actually love that as it makes me wearing one less about the perceived notions of "status" and more about the watch itself. It makes me feel good...it probably makes the "stacker" feel good ....and you know..in the end...that's all that matters

OH man, same thing happened to me when I bought my first Benz, I was 21, (College graduation present to myself) Granted I'm a white male, but they see a young kid, in Jeans and a Tshirt, and didn't give me a second look. Until I asked the receptionist if she would find a salesperson to sell me a car.

I was 24 and worked in a machine shop when I bought my first Tudor Sub in 1985 for $450 new. A year later I bought a brand new Rolex GMT from an AD for $675. Later I worked as a manager of a Domino's Pizza and added a Tudor Chrono $800 new and a nice 5513 used for $500 to my watches. There was also a used Explorer in there I paid $350 for and a Daytona (head only, that did not run for $400 that I passed on ) Ya never know

I've seen stuff like this happen....

I know guy who owns a small casino in Las Vegas. During the holidays his wife likes to work at the mall as a gift wrapper. Some people must wonder... Why is a gift wrapper is wearing all the best and a Rolex... Must surly all be knock-offs…

I got my first Rolex when I was a struggling college student. Those were very lean times for my family. I got it for 2 reasons.
1. I had wanted one for many years.
2. I had my income tax refund in hand (for once, the funds weren't immediately needed)

6 years later, I got a Tudor Big Block Chronograph while I was working as an engineer.

8 years after that, I found myself "downsized" (laid-off and unemployed). I was and am an avid Sporting Clays shooter, and my local shooting club owner called me one morning and told me to get my butt to the club and go to work out there. The deal was that I work for him and look for another job as an engineer. I didn't make very much money, but since I was debt free, it really didn't matter. I worked there for about 9-10 months and made multitudes of new friends. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

During those lean times, I had a Rolex and a Tudor (I think of it as 2 Rolexes) and I wore them daily.

Some people would look at my watches as I picked up empty shotgun shells and loaded targets into automated traps. I also launched targets and kept score for the occasional shooter who'd show up without a shooting buddy. A few people (not the regulars who knew the story anyway) would ask if it was a real Rolex (either that, or they'd ask how a clean-up guy was shooting a Beretta 687 EELL). I'd explain that I was an out of work engineer keeping busy and making a little cash when and where I could.

After that, I was an engineer again, and a couple of years later, I got a fantastic job and bought a TT Blue Submariner.

I know this is a meandering story, but the point is that I've seen good times and bad since I became a Rolex owner. I'm sure that other Rolex owners have survived similar (perhaps even worse) situations.

Despite how much I'm making, or what my current job is, I'm still the same core person I always have been. Regardless of my bank balance, I still have the same strength of character.

As much as I hope and pray that I am prosperous, I realize that I might again have to survive some hard times.

If a guy who's primary job function was to pick up empty shotgun shells and load clay targets into machines can have 2 Rolexes, I have no trouble with shelf stockers, busboys, waiters, or anyone else wearing a Rolex.

Just my take on the topic....

Rawhyde

PS I realize this story puts the shooting sports in a positive light and that some people might be offended, but that's the way it really happened....
