New to the forum, And Rolex

Hello all,
My name is Sol and this is my first Rolex. I have always been a fan of watches and own a couple of Breitlings and a Charriol. I have been interested in this watch for about 5 years maybe more... I finally got it and what a great piece of craftsmanship! I am nearly at loss for words, And the only con is that there is no date dial, this is a weird thing not included on the daytona, Anyone know why?

I do have a couple of questions for watch lovers:
1. This is my first every day automatic, Is it ok to keep the chronograph going all day long, does it wear out any parts? I love the sweep!

2. I was reading about the Tachometer, but how does it really work? I have a couple of chronographs but never used this, Maybe it will become useful one day?

3. I read on a post that about 850k Rolexs are produced per year, how many of those are Daytonas? (I know the SS daytonas are very low production)
Well enough chit-chat, Heres a pic (from camera phone for now)

I would also love to know more info/history/facts on the Daytona models but information is hard to come by on the net on this subject believe it or not. Any links or info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sol,

Welcome to TRF. That's a superb acquisition you have there...nice dial too!!

1. Yes, it's okay to leave the chorno function running. I agree, it is annoying to look at a watch and find the sweep hand at a stationary point.

2. The tachymeter is read off the bezel. Those numbers are speeds in Kms. For example a car travelling at 120 kph (75 mph) would take 30 seconds to cover a distance of 1 Kilometer. So let's say you start your watch when the centre sweep is on 60 on the bezel, it should take 30 seconds to reach the 120 mark for a car travelling at 120 kph over a dsitance of exactly 1 Km....and so on.

3. Not sure about the actual production of Daytonas. Rolex never give out such info.

Cheers - JJ

Hi Solo, welcome!

Congrats on a GREAT first Rolex! What a way to start!!
Rolex is pretty guarded on production numbers. Here's a couple links to get you started.

http://www.secondtimeround.com/cosmo...20history.html

http://www.bjsonline.com/watches/articles/0014.shtml
http://www.rolexsamler.dk/gb_manual_daytona_05-06.htm

If you can locate a copy of VINTAGE ROLEX SPORTS MODELS by Skeet&Urul there's a lot of history on the Daytona.

Actually, it works for us yanks as well... but you have to be able to time the car / motorcycle / horse traveling a distance of 1 mile.

Welcome to the forum...

Thanks for the warm welcoming, I plan on this being my daily worn watch for a while. I do love it and it would be a shame to keep it on a winder (not to mention my other watches do not come close to this!)

Hi, Sol and welcome to TRF. Glad you found our fun house.

Nice first Rolex. You will enjoy it as long as you can get used to not having a date function. That's one of the things that put me off the Daytona. I need that date.

And sometimes you even need the day too.

Actually,
The metre measure "anything"/hour ( hence the UNITS PER HOUR on the bezel)
You start timing something ( laps, metres, yellow dots, telephone poles etc).
You measure the time it takes to measure "one of these events" and the stop the timer. THe number it stops on is the Unit/hour.
ie if you are driving down the road & start the timer at the first telephone pole, and stop it at the second one, and it is at the 400 ( 2 oclock) then you pass one/ 10 seconds or 400/hour.

Hi Sol and welcome!

Yes, most of us are crazy but then, think about how dull we'd be if we were just insane.

Great DT.

My one and only gripe... that is something i will get over though but the question is why is this watch missing such a feature?

Well as for running the chronograph function 24/7,it may affect slightly the power reserve but should not harm movement. But myself would stop and reset it rest overnight.

Why do you think I have one of these:

That way I know the day, month and date at a glance, while I'm timing you flipping watches.

Talk about a multi-functional watch.

It has to do with Rolex's inscrutable marketing instincts. That question is in the same category as: Why is the sky blue?

Sweet Daytona ! Especially love the fat hands.

I have a little regret in flipping my WF last year but it had to go.
