My DHs GMT Master *UPDATE*
Here's a link to my original thread:
http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=11464 Now the update: He sent it off to someone recommended by a friend to have it authenticated and polished. The good news is that it is authentic. Although he's not sure why it doesn't have some type of "swiss" markings on the dial. He's still looking into that. The guy also mentioned that the vintage GMTs had a combination of polished and satin finishes. The last guy who polished the watch polished it all shiny. Can anyone tell me if they are aware of the combo polishing? Do you have any pics of the effect? Should we get it polished that way or just do it all polished shiny the way the new ones are? |

Your guy is right. The watch should have a combination polished (sides of the case) and brushed (lugs-front and back) finish. The case back should be polished. If it were me that's how I'd bring it back.
Here's a few pics, As far as not having "swiss" on the dial--it's a bit odd, but not unheard of. One thing about Rolex is nothing seems to be set in stone. Here are authenticated dials with out the legend---go figure. |

Thanks Mike! He'll be pleased to see the pics of the dials! Poor guy needs some cheering up and he came down with the flu last night. He wants to restore the finish to original too. Your pics are very helpful in knowing how it should look.

I thought the new ones were combined brushed and polished as well... then again I don't have a brand new GMT II to reference.

HI Melissa
As Mike pointed out above, there should be a combination of brushed and polished. I believe only the new Rolex watches with the model number 116234(the extra 1 in the front) for example have the polished lugs. Here is a pic of my 2006 GMT I bought new in Sept. Only the side case and crown guards are polished. Hope this helps. |
