Buying a GMT II, 16760 -86
***UPDATED.... PICTURE OF THE NEW(OLD) WATCH***
Hello I am new here on this forum and i am hawing a problem I own a GMT MASTER II -05 as a daily user, but now i was offered a almost unused GMT MASTER II 16760 -86 for a price that seems OK for me. It has all papers + the box, and it is serviced one year ago mostly because lack of use. Is this a collectable watch, I don´t think it is going to be a daily user for me, but because I like the GMT watch I am interested about this one. Does it have any bad sides, how is the movement, it has a older one than my 16710, does it give any problems. -One not so postitive thing is, no safety clasp.... -Is there problems getting spare parts if needed, I think this this was a short lived model. Positive things -Sapphire chrystal -Quick set hour marker Regards Dennis Last edited by GMT2; 8 January 2007 at 06:18 AM.. Reason: Picture |

Welcome! The 16760 is a rare bird indeed. Sometimes called the "fat-lady" because of it's thick case, the 16760 uses the 3085 movement and was the first to offer the jump-hour feature.
Here's a link with lots of great info, http://www.network54.com/Forum/20759...ad/1163737594/ |

Hi Dennis,
Welcome to TRF. What Mike said!! I bought a 16760 way back in 1987, my first GMT-II with a red/black bezel on Jubilee. Great watch. JJ

The 16760 is a quite rare bird indeed, and getting a lot harder to find.Mint/good ones will only go up in value, like most vintage Rolex. And will increase/hold its value much better that his modern brother.
Welcome to TRF Dennis.

It's definately a collector due to it's rarity, but I hate to think of any watch sitting and not being used and enjoyed.
There is nothing about it that an RSC can't fix if you do wear it and something happens.

I checked the serialnumber, and it seems to be a -84, but sold -86.
I do not think they have sold so many of these in Finland, so it may have been in store for a long time. I will get the "fat lady" home tomorrow |

The "Fat Lady" is sitting on my wrist now, I don´t think it will be a "Box Queen" because
I cant get it off my wrist..... I did bring it to my AD today for pressuretesting to be sure I can use it, and suprise :-( it wasn´t waterproof, it is serviced a year ago at an other AD, they have serviced the movement and it is running fine but they haven´t done anything with the crown (some O ring was broken?), it got a new crown and tube today + a new pressuretest........... Anyway it is in wery good condition, but i will use it, arent they made for it.... I like the watch, I can´t say that i can feel it thicker/heavyer, but i like the wintage look measured to my 16710 -04 -different font at the date -matt dial and bezel insert -yellower markers (old dead tritium, but original) P.S. i did check the both the serialnumber and bracelet number and it seems to be manufactured 1984, but sold new 1986, I don´t think we have many of these in Finland.... Good.
Now that it's water proofed, use it and enjoy it. The GMT is a tool watch, not a fashion queen. Use the hell out of it and enjoy every ding and scratch knowing they came from you wearing a watch that was meant to be worn.

Wow!! That dial looks great!! I can see it across the room!!
Seriously, that is an amazing example of a rare piece indeed. Interesting how because of price at the time, buyer's opted to go with the cheaper 16750. The 16760 is poised to head north! Great find!!! |

Sorry for the size of the picture
But you can see that the bezel insert is matt, it gives the watch a different look. How expensive was the 16760 compared with the 16750 in the mid 80:s, and a second qestion, when did the oyster bracelet got the safety clasp, this one doesen´t have it. Dennis |

I thought there was a pricing chart somewhere here, but I can't find it.
Several reasons accounted for the 16760 being the more expensive of the two. The first to use the jump hour feature and the first to use 904 SS being two. Interestingly the first 16760s had only "OYSTER PERPETUAL" on the dial. Your watch wouldn't have the oysterlock feature. That came out with the late U series circa 1998, about 2 years before sels. |
