The value of a Rolex.

I had drinks with my old boss tonight. He is one of the persons who inspired me to want a Rolex. Tonight I finally asked him about his, as he saw my TT Sub.

He has a SS Submariner. The thing is gorgeous and you are just drawn to look at it when you are talking to him...at least I am.

Anyways I asked him what he paid for it.

In 1992. His ex wife paid $1,800. He just had it serviced and it looked brand new. I mean if it was in the sales case of an AD you would think it was new.

Tells you the value of a Rolex. Could not touch that now for what he paid. It has held its value.

Sidenote. In his divorce his wife wanted it back. He fought her hard. He said "No way I was giving my Rolex back to her!" He fought her off and kept his baby. He said he sleeps and showers with it and it is a part of him. He never takes it off.

I think Rolex is a good value however with the price increases of late, not sure they will appreciate like they have in the past.

Great story, Tom. Sounds like your boss would be a good candidate for the Rolex Keeper's Society! A Rolex can indeed be forever!!!

Anyone want to make a guess as to how much the Sub LV would be worth 15 years from now?

Why didn't I inherit an heirloom consisting all these models?

Seriously, if you have these models, would you sell them? OK, if you do sell them you'll only get today's inflated dollars in exchange. IMHO, not such a big deal if you consider the replacement cost.

For those who are interested...

1800 USD in 1990 is 'worth' 2800 USD today.

Assuming the boss could sell his Rolex for that figure, it would appear that a Rolex is actually inflation-proof.

Good to know. And it gives you the time as well!

Wait until it's 40 years old, and comes back looking like it's new. That will blow your socks off.

Sure. Rolex raises their prices an average of 10% each year. So, assuming a present day value of $5,500.- on the LV that would put it at about $16,500.- in 15 yrs. give or take. Of course, if Rolex stops making them they would probably go higher...

Hmmm... now seems like a good time to pick one up... Larry.
