If you ask me, if:

1) It contains the cal. 2500

OR

2) It's a Speedmaster Pro

Then you can't go wrong. Excellent watches, great designs, just one or two niggling question marks over reliability of certain movements, and the service department (especially in the UK).

I own both. Vintage and modern Omega ( Seamaster 1962 and Planet Ocean ) plus a Rolex Explorer.

The modern watches are both similar in quality in my opinion. Rolex have better brand recognition with the general public and I would expect a Submariner to hold its value better than a Planet Ocean.

I have noticed that Omega, like Tag Heuer, have raised their prices recently. The Omega Boutique in Sydney tried to convince me that the new Omega were equal or better to Rolex. I would tend to buy the Rolex in preference to the Omega if the prices were the same.

They are watches that appeal to different tastes & requirements. They both tell time and that's as far as I am concerned is generally where the similarity ends. Each is unique in its own right (Cobra or Mitsubishi Evo?)

Rolex vs Omega vs Panerai vs JLC vs IWC vs UN vs Blancpain

It doesn't make sense.

Now if one wants to create a thread with specific comparisons on two similar watches from different manufacturers then that's something to get your teeth into.

Been there done that.

I love Rolexes, but something is to be said for being able to get a decent discount from an AD on an Omega.

In general I'd take a Sub or GMT over the comparable Omega offering, even for the extra $$$. I don't understand the whole Bond thing, either...why did they have to redo the whole line of Seamasters. Seems like a "New Coke" move to me. I guess they weren't selling.

As for which is the better quality watch...not going there.

I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on a Speedy Pro as we speak.....(with Fr. John's input, of course)

This discussion has been had many times on this and other forums and elsewhere - and it will continue to be so for a very long time. As I said above I love both my Rolex and Omega watches - does it matter which you prefer as long as you have the watch you want?
