5513 (or 5512)
A friend is looking for a no-date Sub, and I suggested the 5513 as a "cooler" alternative to the 14060 (M). Can these be picked up in the UK for reasonable money (less than, say, £3k)? I was quite shocked to see them selling for £4 - 5k. Also, am I right in thinking the 5512 is usually much more expensive?
Pointers much appreciated. James Oops thread title typos Last edited by Tools; 6 March 2011 at 10:37 AM.. |

You're really struggle to get completely original examples for less than £3K now, £3.5K is the new minimum really for a genuine example (matt dial, 500 to a grand less for a WG example).
You can get them for less than £3K, but chances are the dial will be a replacement (nothing wrong with that so long as you're comfortable with it and the price reflects this), and / or hands, bezel insert etc. Also, you may find the case lugs are a little thinner from over polishing. One way to get a 'nicer' example for less dosh is to go for a head only, not a problem if you only ever intend wearing it on a NATO, but not a good idea if you plan to put it on a bracelet in the future, as the cost differential is rarely enough to cover the price of a good heavy oyster (getting dearer all the time it seems ...). Obviously, pricing varies considerably between private ads on here and dealer pricing, for under £3K you really are looking at private only, and that introduces its own set of (potential) risks. So, if the watch is going to be worn in water, even if its just swimming, I'd probably take another look at the 14060. Have some change to from your £3K to put towards the next purchase... and there will be a next purchase, believe me! |

Thanks for such an informative and carefully thought-out response. Lots of food for thought.
Could a Mod please edit my title? |

James-
There are so many varying factors in pricing these Subs--ie. matte or gilt, pcg or not, closed chapter rings etc. In general-the earlier 5512's are a lot more expensive. It of course depends on condition like anything else and the dial condition is so critical! As a matter of fact--Mike Wood also has a nice 5513 available last I checked. Cheers! Ken

Ken, thanks again. "£P.O.A." sounds ominous and expensive!

Just picked up a '75 5513 when back in the UK a few weeks ago. Untouched 5513's with all papers and boxes etc etc are making strong money. Depends if you are worried about future price/collecting, or just want a cool watch. Just make sure you don't send it back to Rolex for servicing as I hear in the Uk they will swap out the dial and hands as a matter of course, and you will not get the old ones back. Apparently it is to stop the demand for old watches! My 5513 is back with me in Vietnam and the original bracelet (folded oyster) is in the box safely in the UK, and the watch is sat nicely on a Nato strap. It is my friday watch, trusty ExII is my every day wearer.
