My rant, the tongue-biter

Okay, I love watches, but not ALL watches. In fact, there are few watches I really like. This brings me to the subject of this thread, the watch related tongue-biter.

My co-workers all wear watches, but most of them don’t care what they wear as long as it tells the time. Sort of. What this amounts to are cheap quartz affairs with lousy gold plating that has worn off after 2 months. To make matters even worse, many of these POS are ‘adorned’ by non matching bracelets because the original bracelets fell apart after one year. They don’t even take the trouble to find a bracelet or band of the correct size, so one can ‘enjoy’ 18mm bands on 20mm lugs. The humanity of it all!

What drives me bonkers is that they don’t care! They shrug their shoulders and say that it tells the time, what more is necessary? That is when I bite my tongue. How can anybody be that insensitive as to what they wear as a watch?

I’m totally aware of the fact that WIS are a different breed but that indifference I can witness just about every day baffles me. A watch can be a lifetime companion and the only chance for a man to invest in something personal. Something nice. And they blow it on a cheapo POS. Why, oh why?

Frans.

Great post Frans. Although I agree with you, some people just can't fathom the idea of spending over $50 on any watch. Especially in today's age with everything from your car to your cell phone and DVD player having a clock on it.
Once someone at work noticed my watch and pointed it out and how much it cost (retail) the other people gasped for air. They just don't get it and probably never will. I look at it like this. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. I encounter alot of people that hate motorcycles and ask me how I could possibly ride one especially since I lost a cousin in an accident. They have their hobbies and we have ours. If some people don't want to enjoy one of the finer things in life like a nice watch then the heck with em. It's also a nice heirloom to pass on to someone one day.
One thing that really bugs me is when a guy has on a shirt and tie and is wearing either a digital watch or worse a digital watch with a rubber strap.

Well, Frans, just last week some guy crapped on in another forum about how all watches tell the time blah blah, and demanded that I explain what the big deal was about having a watch like a Rolex.

He was the sort to wear his ignorance as a badge of honour, so I gave him an answer that satisfied us both: "You wear a Casio so that you're on time. You wear a Rolex because you don't have to be on time. Either you get it or you don't".

You hit the spot! The rubber strap that didn't came with the 'watch'. This makes me want to hurdle myself from 10 stories down, a quick death. Anything better than these unsightly things. What? What’s wrong with it, they have the audacity to ask!

Thanks. I feel so lucky this forum exists. I had no idea when I acquired my watch. I just happened upon it. What a blessing!

I gotta tell you, some people can't believe that I don't drive a nicer car. Or that my television is not HD. Watches are no different, some people see them as nice jewelery and others see them as a clock on their wrist, nothing wrong with that, IMHO.

I don't why you let it get to you, Frans. Some of us are connoisseurs and the rest are pedestrian plebians. We put up with them because there is no real alternative, unless we can find ourselves an island somewhere in a temperate climate with discount ADs and reasonably prices single malt whisky purveyors.

Frans,

I can understand where you're coming from....but seriously it shouldn't bother you at all.

Seeing someone wear a POS cheap plastic watch does NOT bug me. But seeing someone wearing a fake Rolex just about makes me want to punch him!! And if that same guy gloats over the fact that he's proud of his fake Rolex telling us how much he's saved by NOT buy the real McCoy....then that ba$tard is DEAD, DEAD, DEAD!!!

Fortunately, there aren't too many in the latter category. Most Kiwis here just can't afford high-end expensive Swiss watches....they are happy with 50 dollar Pulsars, Olympics and Astinas.

So relax, my friend. It takes all kinds of people to make up this world....we think on a different level altogether and therefore find it virtually impossible to relate and comprehend how others think on these matters.

Cheers - JJ

I went to a whisky tasting the other night. They had an excellent selection of Glenmorangie, Balvenie, Macallan, Talisker, Laphroig, Glenrothes, among others. I came away from there (besides feeling rather happy - or rather happily having no feeling at all, especially in my toes, fingers and lips ) continue to be convinced that my three favorite whiskies are (in order)

25 yr old Macallan
30 yr old Balvenie
10 yr old Laphroig.

The first two are beautifully smooth and well finished; and I love the peat of the Laphroig.

I tasted a 30 yr old Laphroig, but it did not have the smoothness of the Macallan or Balvenie nor the peat of the Laphroig.

I got news for you, Peter. It's not only in the UK that fine single malts are getting expensive. Over here the prices are bordering on the outrageous, in part because of the lousy exchange rate. I have to really conserve on my supplies to make them last longer.

Now in the UK average price for single malt 10 yr old Laphroig,£20,15yr old Laphroig £38, 20 yr old good brand £75, and a 25 yr old, from £130 -£175 depending on brand, you
might get a better deal online.
