For that amount I would pick a Fortis! Low end new, or High-end used.

Looks great, IMHO.

I agree with many that the Marathon is hard to beat. I prefer the look of the May 2006 contract SAR.

For $1000, I'd rather have a vintage Rolex. 40s-70s. Plenty of good ones on ebay and other places.

Guaranteed to get you your money back.

Granted, but you're nearly guaranteed a big upfront cost to ensure the vintage is in proper working order. Bob Ridley stated this when I took my first vintage to him. He said when a watch is that old, problems and lists of needed fixes are the rule not the exception. Basically any vintage you buy save for a few at the top end are going to need a basic service and probably lots more.

IMO, with the costs being what they are, I think low value vintages are a negative sum game. It is much easier to extend beyond the value of the timepiece repairing a reasonably priced vintage compared to repairing say a DRSD. A friend recently complained that he was going to have to put more into a TT AKD than he spent on it. Granted, he got an insane deal on the watch initially but you get the idea.

First post, so take that for what its worth.....BUT, I would vote for the Victorinox Dive Master 500 Mecha. Can be had in the price range new, and it is exceptional. Obligatory crappy cell phone pic:
