1603 have an engine-turned SS bezel, like on yours. Engine-turned bezel is always SS.

If you had a white gold fluted bezel, it would be a 1601, not a 1603. Fluted bezel is in Gold and its look is different than engine-turned bezel.

Remove the bracelet and have a look at 12 between lugs, you'll know your model definitely. With this bezel, it should show 1603.

In both case the crown should be SS, with "-" not ".." which is the sign of white gold as previously stated.

It says 1603 between the lugs. So does that mean the crown has been replaced at some point?

It probably has been during a service.

Alright, I'll be searching for the right crown now, too! When I get a new crown, should I keep the old one, or sell it?

And now for some reason the second hand is no longer moving, but the watch is still keeping time. Do you guys think a service will fix that?

i recommend you buy the following band; 62510H. its a jubi and you can add in links for your Mongo wrist. i have big wrists too and i got 2 extra links and i am happy.

you should try to pay 300-350 for it used. i would not recommend sinking tons of money into the watch; you will have trouble sellng it for more than say 1500 down the road.

i own the EXACT same 1601/1603. but mine has the original and very worn out band.

it also has the same crown. i like that crystal. dont change it.
Last one I had like this I traded for a old submariner even. The first dj I had I gave a guy a new seiko for it bc he didnt want to spend money on service. Alot of old guys dont knw what they have. Well u won this time I would say find a fact band just for value and put the original back on it

I think you need specialists advice at some point.

It seems that this watch has been put together by different parts, e.g. crown and bracelet, so you should some day return it to its original state.

So, a specialist can service it for the moment and let you know what your next steps shall be.

You have the advantage that you bought it cheap, so its worth spending some money on it when you will have some available considering that now you are a student.

I have a similar Datejust bought in 1968 and had it recently serviced at RSC Dallas and am very happy with the results. If you're interested, you can send it to them and they'll tell you what you have and suggest work and prices. In my case, they offerred a service of the movement (with new crown, crystal, etc) and seperately a new bracelet, new dial and new hands, and even a new case. I could select any of that work I wanted. You don't have to do any or all of what they suggest, but it at least gives you a clear set of options.
