US Customs Duty for Watches
I am trying to figure out what the customs duties would be on a watch if I purchased it outside the US and brought it back with me.
Its been very difficult to find how its calculated. This is the best I could find. In typical government fashion you cant understand it! http://dataweb.usitc.gov/scripts/tariff_current.asp Can anyone that has done this help?

Simple wear it back and don't claim it =). Just mail yourself the receipt and box from wherever you are and put it on your wrist and wear it all the way back home

http://www.canada.com/news/Undeclare...623/story.html I'm pretty sure that's not the picture of the watch in question. I think the media just used a random picture of a random Rolex. The offenders were stupid to try to carry the CoA with them and then getting their daughter to hide the watch.

I really don't understand some of these rules.
What about people that live in multiple countries or have multiple nationalities ? Are they supposed to declare it every time they move with it ? Lets say I live in England and spend some time working in Chicago (2 months of the year) and also live in Hong Kong for 2 months. I have triple citizenship. Am I supposed to declare the watch every time I carry it to a new place ? |

Wear a disposable watch there, so you don't go without one in the meantime. Mail the box and papers back home to yourself. Wear the watch home. |

Does anyone know how customs know what is in a parcel ? How does someone know the difference between a Rolex box which doesn't need to be taxed or a Rolex box with an actual Rolex in it ? Is it x-ray ?

I know that if Canadian customs finds an empty watch box mailed into the country they will nail you with duties and penalties. Mailing the receipt and warranty is no problem. Would think similar rules would apply in the States.
