Hacking
Can anyone explain " hacking" in terms of setting the hands on a watch.

Hacking a watch means that when you pull the crown out the second hand stops. Therefore you can adjust not only the hour and the minute hands but also the second hand with a reliable time reference.
Now perhaps I'm missing a couple of details but that's pretty much it!

Carl got the how done right - the why is because in some things seconds matter.
When you want a group of people to execute something at a given time - and do so accurately to the second - hacking everyone's watch to a time mark is important. Like the countdown on New Year's Eve!!!
