I am thinking of buying this "Bond" 6536 Submariner...

And would be very grateful for views on whether or not any part of it has been refurbished or replaced or if it looks to be a "Frankenstein". I only have two pictures at the moment:

Thanks in advance for any help. A newbie would be very grateful. Cheers!

The insert doesnt look right to me. Maybe a cut down contemporary insert? The crown is also incorrect. The hands also appear to be newer

hands patina doesn't match dial, "100m = 30 ft" is white color, has the dial been serviced? should the bezel triangle be red? It is hard to tell from the 2 pictures only. need better pictures to tell the dial condition. there is always risk to buy/wear something that old.

Crown has been replaced, the original 6mm crown was a brevet style. The dial could be original, white depth rating with all other gilt on a gloss dial seems right to me. Don't know about the insert. Pics of the case and inside the caseback would tell us more. The curve of the lugs and lug holes look good- something that some of the fugazi cases don't get right. It would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the high end fakes just to make sure what you have here is legitimate. The high-end overseas fake casemakers are good, but some things they just can't get right.

I don't think the hands are original, the bezel insert looks to be a later model trimmed down to fit. Triangle at top could be red or not, Rolex made both. How much are they asking?

and to be clear it isn't a bond sub ...a bond sub is a big crown..not a small crown.

I don't think this is Jacek's. His pics always have a gray background.

If you want a watch like this PM Philippe or Jacek !
These are $$$$ watches so they need to be 100 % correct
My .02

Pretty sure Philippe has several . . . ;-)
And if not he knows where to find one
It's only a 1 a 2 hour flight from the UK to Holland . . ;-)

Contact both and see what they have available . .

My opinion is to pass on the watch. Why would you spend that much on a watch without examining it in person - from a seller you don't even know? Find a solid seller and take some time to physically examine the watch and be fully knowledgeable of the characteristics of the watch before you view it. That way, you won't have any surprises later like a few members here, and VRF, have suffered in the past. Most high-end, rare, vintage Rolex models do not pass the auction block on ebay and the sellers there are looking to fish in a buyer that is not fully knowledgeable in the particuliar model they are selling.

Of course this is just my opinion, but it has worked for me on high-end purchases in the past.

Just saw Jed has a 6538 Bond on his site, don't know much about these references besides that they are high up on serious collectors lists, what's the fundamental diference between a 6536 and a 6538? Is it that a 6536 is a small crown and a 6538 a big crown? What about rarity?

as usual desireability combined with rarity..lot,.lot less BC around and the bond connection always draws a crowd :)

the example i have is a real original watch that wears its age on its sleeve but not prisitine , but then its nearly half the price of a minter........in fact with the early combinations on this one probably a lot less than half the price of a minter if such a thing exists ..the earlier watches have the higher radium content and as a rule that tends to dull the laqceur coat a lot quicker which makes them appear a lot flatter...but then the sum of its parts probably outweighs asking...

i just need to organize a proper photo shoot as those ones are lousy !

all gilt long hands, no hash skinny bezel, early style 2 line all gold gilt dial ...

sorry if it sounded pedantic, but a small crown is not a bond sub ...and is the kind of mistake that is also made when people see a standard cosmograph and call it a newman

It is not particularly cheap for a small crown. why risk it for something you are not sure and just so-so condition? keep looking man.

Makes it even more confusing because that one is a 6536 with a 6538 case:), guess collecting these requires quite a bit of learning on all those variations!
