I dont' know about the NY diamond district, but I have a close friend who bought an engagement ring in the Chicago diamond district and found out that it was a CZ about 6 months later. I'd stay with an AD or TRF trusted seller. I'd NEVER buy from any diamond district!

I've never been a big fan of the Diamond District in NYC. I feel like a seal in a pool of sharks. I just don't feel like I'm getting the best deal.

I was in NYC last weekend and visited the Diamond District just to check out the watches. There were a couple of vendors with some very nice Rolex inventories with pretty reasonable prices. Keep in mind that if you live in NY you will have to pay sales tax also. While I was just there to look....I did try on a few Sub C's and getting more watch envy.

If you know what your looking at there is no reason why you shouldn't compare prices down there.

If you know what you are doing then you CAN and WILL get a great deal in the Diamond district.. My wife and her mom know a few jewelers there but I do not think they are into watches..

If you are a newbie, you really shouldn't be focused on the diamond district - just my opinion.

diamond district
there is an unspoken code of honor on 47th street that members live by.
break the code and you are ostracized. word gets around, with or without twitter. most business is done by handshake among the fraternity of businessmen. outsiders can do business there, but it's advisable to have someone hold your hand. there are no authorized rolex dealers on 47th st. but there is an underground of procurement from good and questionable sources. i think a deep discount raises reasonable questions about the pedigree and legitimacy. if you are tempted to try your luck, suggest you bring your own expert, as they ae unlikely to allow you to take it off street before buying it. the romans had it right..."caveat emptor". |

I've been to the diamond district in NYC. Their prices are amazing for high quality, high grade color, low inclusion rating diamonds. You cannot beat their prices, quality, and craftsmanship. Plus, the last time I was there I started talking to one of the old old salesmen (at least 80) and he owned this particular store and I was telling him about the book I am writing on the Holocaust (cuz I had a suspicion he was from Poland or the Czech due to his accent) and sure enough, he was a child in Poland during the war and fled with his parents to NYC. It was worth the trip to hear his story. If you ever go to NYC, go to the diamond district, go in the little shops and look around, even if you are not going to buy. Get a good idea of prices, quality, and craftsmanship before you buy a diamond. |
