Of course you can't play golf, it's not a Rolex.

well, good to see VC being honest about the robustness of their watches compared to rolex!

"Q: Chinese customers like complications, but they don’t treat them with the necessary care. I recall the boss of Sea-Gull saying, 'You can play tennis wearing our tourbillon.'

CS: (Laughs) This negligence doesn’t just apply to watchmaking, it’s common practice in China, where they think that the more they spend, the more robust – or even unbreakable – something is. In reality, the opposite is true! Unfortunately, some advertisements encourage this attitude, like the Rolex campaign with a golfer hitting the ball. I feel for the watch in this case, because it is totally unsuitable for such an activity, the impact of the club being transferred to the watch on the wrist, creating harmful vibrations in the movement. But we have to soak this up, we cannot say to the customer: 'Do not wear your watch to play golf!' But during the sale, we take the time to explain to the customer the care that a mechanical watch needs, with regular maintenance every three to five years. To make things easier to understand, we draw parallels with the maintenance of a car."

This topic comes up again and again. I would agree that while many high end complicated watches are not suited for impact-type activities, I wear my GMTIIC to play golf all the time. In fact, I have worn all of my Rolex over the years to play golf. Never a problem.

Many Rolex owners seem to grossly underestimate just how durable and rugged these watches are. They can handle most anything you can throw at them.

When any of these patrons are sick of their VC's they can send them my way...

I wouldn't wear a grand complication watch while golfing, I don't see the problem when wearing a sportswatch though.

Whether a watch is durable enough for active sports isn't that important to me...it's the weight.......I cycle & trail walk/hike...gimme a good old resin G-Shock for activity like that....it's light & strong.
If I golfed or played tennis, no watch.

I agree with all you and everyone else has said...but I am one who does have issues with my GMT Pepsi and all other mechanical watches and battery operated watches.....

I have the uncanny ability to make almost all watches(only one so far that I can wear is a newer made Casio G-Shock which sets its time by the Atomic Clock and runs on energy stored from the sun and artificial light sources)stop running due to my body chemistry. Or like with my Rolex GMT it slows down or speeds up with no rhyme or reason. My older brother and our deceased Dad could make all watches stop running as well and my brother has stopped wearing watches altogether. Maybe if I wore a Milgauss it would work properly???

But currently what I have found out through my AD and RSC is that I magnetize the GMT and it will never stay running within COSC specs!!!
Take care.....Leo

That's an interesting thing, Leo.
I have heard other people say that for some reason their 'body chemistry' seems to interfere with the working of their watches.
Clocks and watches never kept good time in my childhood home and my Father used to say it had to be to do with the location of the house on a granite ridge. (As a geologist he was probably a good marketing manager).

I wouldn't think it's the "impact of the ball", more the swinging motion putting stress on the rotor assembly...

Oh, well what do I know... But I barely feel the impact of the ball in my hands, can't really imagine it will transfer to a watch on my wrist. It's not like hitting a stonewall with a baseball bat.

It's nice to gave a durable watch, but I'm with Bob when it comes to combining watches with active sports.

tinger, thanks for the link to that article. It was a great read.
