Cal. 3000 v. 3130

Dear fellow members,

In the quest for the right model for myself, I came to like the Explorer 1. Simple, reliable, understated and with great historical significance.

I was considering the 14270. Then, I stumbled on Walt Odets review, which I know has been extensively debated here and everywhere. I do not wish to restart the discussion, but that brings a question which I could not sort out browsing the forum and the net: Is the movement 3130 in the 114270 significantly better built than the cal 3000? Or shall I expect more or less the same, except the mechanical improvements elsewhere described?

Regards,
Jorge

If you don't want to restart it, why bring it up..

The Odet article has been debunked over and over; the 3000 movement was used in many watches besides the Explorer, including the Air King and the Sub and is the non-date version of the 3035 movement used in Datejusts and Sub Dates..

The 14270 also came with the 3130 and just like the Sub is a 14270M (and Air King 14000M) for the modified movement..

The 3000 and the 3130 are almost exactly the same except for a larger balance wheel, full balance bridge and some accompanying parts to make it fit.. These would not be considered "significantly better" improvement as many movements still do not have a full bridge and large wheels; they are Rolex milestones.

You should get the 114270 if you want the later SEL bracelet and engraved rehaut, not because of the movement..
