Ebay 1680 midcase replacement

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rolex-Submar...item461ba3d703

Ad says this had a mid case replacement. What does that entail? It says original hands too but they seem to have been replaced.

It means at some point the case itself was likely damaged and replaced (therefore not the case that originally left the factory with the watch). In theory the movement, dial and hands were taken out of the original case and put into a new one.

The crystal and case back would have been reused - just the middle was replaced.

Furthermore the serial number should be from the case replacement range vs. the watch's original s/n.

So that would greatly affect the value I would guess. Probably more so on a double red than a great white?

Vintage purists tend to want the watch as it was 'born', and buy accordingly.
