1 Year Wedding Gift for Wife
Hello from Ohio! I have our 1 yr wedding anniversary coming up later this month and thought about getting my wife a Rolex as a surprise gift. I have a friend that has a shop that just got in a 1982 oyster perpetual date in mint condition, in a men's style however the perfect size for my wife as she likes the bigger watch. Would a watch that is 30 yrs old be a good gift, or should I look for something newer? Thoughts?

Of course it's a good gift. But I would prefer to give something New or as good as new. All depends on your budget. Check out the sale boards here.

What about a birth year watch? Again it depends on your budget.

thanks gents! actually...thinking of it, her birth year is 1982 :)
I'll have to take a look at the sale boards as mentioned, appreciate the info. My only issue is Id probably drive the seller nuts asking the sizes etc as Im not to familiar with the rolex size vs others. as far as budget, its a big memory for the 1st IMO so I want to do it right but for the watch Im referencing Im getting a price of $1800, again a close jeweler friend of mine |

If you want to make a 2 year anniversary, I seriously suggest you do not buy your wife something that interests most men and very few women. It is akin to buying her a lovely hand crafted shotgun or a 60" wide television. If she is interested in say flower arranging, buy her a flower pot. If you want to prove your undying love, whisk her off to Venice and hire a Gondola followed by a meal for two in some top notch restaurant. That is what women like, they absolutely love it. Trust me, I have been married for nearly 43 years and I know what I am talking about. Regards Mick |

Bear in mind that every year you will be expected to go one better than last year, or at least match it.

One with a really endearing story behind it.

Every time I have tried to pick out a watch for my wife I have been dead wrong.
Best of luck!

$1800 is not a bad price for a 1982 Oyster Date. I would snap it up and make her very happy on your anniversary.

As a guy with 48 years of wedded bliss under my belt.. Consider this. A Rolex is a hard act to follow. While it is a great gift, what are you going to do next year, and at your 10th and your 25th and your 50th? You are setting the bar very high very soon into your marriage. Great if you can sustain that level of
generosity. Congrats on the one year event. Hope you have a marriage that is as filled with love and joy as mine is. Bill Also, jewelry for many women is a very personal thing.. I would only buy her a Rolex that she liked the style and finish and approved. I would never buy my wife a piece of jewelry without her ok-ing it first. |

I've been with mine 19 years. Offered a number of times to buy her a Rolex. She currently wears an ICE watch for £90 and openly says she wouldn't appreciate/respect the money spent on a Rolex.
My point is that the gift needs to be desired and be appreciated. She would rather spend the money on a family holiday. |

First year Anniversary is paper. That was boooring. Then I came across a company that wrote paperbacks with your characters in it. They had a paperbacks about one of the things she is interested in. I described her best friend, our cat, my best friend, and us. The story revolved around our characters. For and extra fee I was able to get the Wedding picture put on the back of the book.
That not only went over big with her, it went over big with her friends. Just a thought. |

appreciate the thoughts! She is the wife that said she'd get engaged with a ring pop and didn't need anything fancy and like your guys we appreciate each others gifts regardless of the price tag. I know the traditional gift is paper and the contemporary is a clock...which tells time which is what made me think of a watch :)

I would have it checked out by a watchmaker to see if it keeps good time before buying.

I think the watch is a great idea. Im a diamond kinda girl myself, but I would have gladly accepted a vintage watch. :-)
When I was married, the FIRST anniversary was a big deal...by the time the 2nd one rolled around, it was an anniversary. Firsts of anything are always special. When I hit my 2nd anniversary we went on a really nice trip and lazed on a beach for a week. Was nice. No expensive gifts were exchanged. Don't let these guys scare you into thinking you have to top the watch for the rest of the anniversaries. LOL LOL Enjoy the moment. :-D |

If she would appreciate a vintage piece, go to for it. I got my wife a white Chanel J12 a few years ago and she loves it (I think she likes correcting people when they ask if it's a michael kors). She likes the jewelry aspect but doesn't care as much about the history so it really just depends on what your wife is into.
