I have a Explorer 1 36mm and an Explorer 11 40mm, they are both very comfortable. You will love them!

To add to this, the date just seems to wear somewhere in between the 36 mm explorer 1 and the 39 mm explorer 2. May be your sweet spot in comfort level, and is also a classic. Plus, they are pretty easy to find since there still sold at authorized dealers.

Spend just a bit more & get a Sub ND. Stout resale, perfect size, iconic, etc. I had a 36mm Explorer and eventually sold it as it didn't do either duty exceptionally well (sport or dress). So save your money as you may do what I did: Sub for casual and Datejust for dress.

The 40mm Exp II is quite dainty for a sports watch, in fact it actually measures 39mm despite what Rolex say. The sloping bezel and Twinlock crown make for a lesser wrist presence than a Sub or GMT. You won't know the answer until you've actually tried on the watches yourself

Both Explorers are very nice indeed! My own preference would be the II but you could nor go wrong either way!

OP probably already decided, but having owned both I can chime in. The 16570 wears smaller and lighter than the 214270. This is not saying the 214270 is heavy or big, but to me on my wrist it feels heavier and looks larger compared to the 16570. It has a much more solid feel to it compared to the 16570 but that may be the updated bracelet and clasp.
Both are great watches! I do not regret letting my 16570 go for my 214270 at all though. This is the best, most versatile watch I have ever owned. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk |

Are we back on this again? The OP has probably already flipped whatever he decided on.

I have a soft spot for the 36 Ex1 as that was the first rolex I ever bought. For a first rolex, it's perfect looks good with a suit or t-shirt, but then I eventually added more to my collection and grew out of it a bit. However I think for the OP that is indeed the perfect watch. having said that, I'm now looking to get a 16570 polar which i've only recently come to appreciate. Either way you can't go wrong.

I have the exp ii black for a while..I used to have sub date 40mm and panerai pam112 44mm. 40mm is absolutely my size. This weekend I had a chance to try 36mm exp i and found it really small in size. And I find the date function useful. So exp ii for me..good luck!
