My 6 year old's got the bug...
Well he's almost seven but he's got the watch bug early. He's been bugging my wife for 4 months straight about the Dark Side of the Moon. I finally took him down to the boutique to see it in person. He's convincing me to buy it so I can pass it on to him later on. I keep telling him next year, next year boy. I'm going to have just as hard as a time waiting as he is.

Okay I've got to ask, how does a six year old find out about a DOSM when you don't already have one? WatchTime? He would be rocking elementary school with one, that's for sure. |

I bought my first Rolex last year and one of my "reasons" I justified it to my wife was that I was going to hand it down to him one day. My son is pretty much my best friend and he's very much a daddy's boy so he usually likes everything that I have/do. He liked the Rolex but my other son seems really drawn to it. If I take it off and can't find it I can guarantee that my other boy has it. My 6yo sees him playing with it and tells me that it's ok if I give it to him instead because it makes him really happy. Pretty deep thoughts for a 6yo if you ask me. One day I was surfing around the forum looking at watches and I was looking at the DSOM and my 6yo asked me what that watch was. I started telling him the Speedmaster story, Apollo missions etc. and how Omega made a blacked out version of the moon watch as a tribute. As I was telling him, you could just see his excitement and thrill about the history and beauty of the watch line. Ever since then he hasn't stopped talking about it. It's been six months now and he still talks about it every day. Now he wants to be an astronaut so he can wear "his DSOM on the moon" lol. I'll get it next year with the tax return so he's got to wait until then. Then he's got to wait until I'm ready to part with it which might be a while. |

That's pretty awesome. My son is 15 and doesn't care about watches at the moment but my collections will eventually go to him and my daughter. My dad never gave me a nice watch (I grew up in the quartz era) but he did give me a beautiful 22k gold necklace which I haven't taken off (other than brief moments) for about 30 years. The sentimental value far outweighs the real value and I think what you're doing is awesome (although I'm sure some may disagree). Don't show him the Lunar Dust model or you'll really be in trouble! BTW, if he wants to be an astronaut, tell him he should head up to my neighborhood (Purdue) and he will be in good company. |
