5970 or 5270
Get the benchmark reference first or the grail. Focus on the grail/ trophy.
The rest will follow because it's easier to get anyway because of price point. |

5004 is a true classic, but on the smaller side. My first love was the 5004 until I saw the 5204, which is 3mm larger, in house, and technically improved over the Lemania movement. Whether it's better is truly a matter of personal preference though.

In house blows the lemania away. I am not biased I own 2 lemania and 1 in house. Not even close!

Curious in what ways would you say the in house is superior over the Lemania?

I like all three but I'd get the 5170 and Platona.

I tried on the 5204P at an AD a few months ago. It is several mm thicker than the 5270G and felt a bit bulky compared to the 5270G. |

I have tried the 5170 (in yellow gold) and I was amazed by the simplicity, the presence and the movement.
The daytona would make an excellent everyday watch and thus would those two be a great duo for me. |

1) the watch is more accurate with regard to time 2) the chrono function is more accurate do to the new patent. First patent on chron tech since late 1880s. On the lemania, the chrono starts .5 seconds late roughly every other time. The 5270 is dead on, no lag. 3) power reserve- neither are as stated but the in house is at least 12 hrs longer. 4) smooth winding and chrono function- way less friction on gears which should result is longer life. |

I do, I store them in the shipping box. Keeps staps fresh. Plus you can't scratch them moving around in box.

What a terrific thread and I don't even own a PP. My two cents is that if, like me, you are a bit rough on your watches, accidentally hit them against the wall, desk, laptop....then the Platona would be a great everyday with whatever PP you could manage as a special watch.

the 5970 is obviously a fantastic watch last of the lemania but......
if I was going to buy a watch in this family it would have to be J as it is the rarest and if I were you and looking to spend that kind of cash I would want the most collectable and I see the J as toping the plat one day in price and desirability just because there were less made than any other metal. In this case I would go 5170G+plat but if you switched to a 5970J then hands down it would be my pick :) Also the 5960P with the black dial is tops for the 5960 family. Make sure you buy into the 5170 and plat at the right price or you will get burned in the rump on the resale |
