Rolex Daytona Unused for long time

Hey guys,

I have found a genuine Rolex Daytona in my grandfather's house, he bought it really long time ago, and it wasn't in use for couple of years. Now- I know Rolex is Self winding (Automatic) watches and I wanted to know what can I do in order to bring it back to life.The watch isn't working since It wasn't in use for years. Some told me I will need to wind the crown in the side for 30-40 times or even more, some said I'll have to shake it for couple of days in the mornings till it will work. Is there really a way I can fix it by my own or I will have to take it to some jewelery shop near my town to make them fix it for me, even though i don't really like this idea since i believe fixing such an luxury watch will cost much, and not to mention Im afraid they will replace the watch with some replica.

Any idea how can I fix this?
Or how much you think will cost fixing it?

If you are sure that it's genuine then it should start working with a manual wind of around 40 turns for a full wind.

If that doesn't work (you may need to give is a very slight shake to start it ticking) then something inside is broken.

An overhaul on a Daytona will cost around 750 to 800 USD but that would be a fraction of it's actual value.

if it is a real Daytona, would send it in to Rolex for service, a very small price to pay considering what it is worth

Well it has all genuine Rolex characteristics, I don't think Replica/Fake watches were common when my grandfather bought this.

Does it matter to which side I wind it? I need to pull it out and then wind?
If it wasn't in use for really long time (I am talking about years of unused watch) will wind it around the 40+ will make it work?

Presuming that it's an Oyster Perpetual model, just stir it some, like you were stirring a brandy glass to get the second hand going, then wind it about 40 times.
That should do it.

If you trust your Grandfather I wouldn't sweat if it's real or not at this point. Photos would help us out in that department.

A Rolex has a screw-down crown so first you need to unscrew it and it will pop out to the winding position, then, yes, around 40 winds will give it enough power to last a couple of days. Watches only wind in one direction and that's clockwise as you look down on the crown, the other way is just a ratchet wheel.

If the watch has been in the drawer for 2 years, who knows how long it has been since the last clean and O/H. The watch could be dry in which case you might not want to run it at all until it has had a fresh lube job. Just like a car, you wouldn't drive it or even start it without oil in the the motor. Even Rolexes need to be cleaned and O/Hed. As far as switching for a fake ..... there must be a trusted jeweler somewhere in Israel.

OP... keep in mind if "he bought it really time ago" it may not be self-winding (Automatic) because really long time ago Daytona's were manual wind. In that case, even if you get it going just wearing it will not keep the watch wound--you would need to wind it up manually every couple of days or whenever it stops.

Just bring it in a RSC, let them check the authenticity. If it is then why bother thinking about the $800 as you are really inheriting a treasure. If itself a replica, too bad but still you can try your luck on some Chinese kinda ebay.

For all those think I stole/found this watch im really upset about it guys. I said i'll add some pics once I go visiting them, it might be today. From what I know, my grandfather said he didn't use the watch because it's automatic watch (works by the move of the hand) and because he put it in the side for some time he didn't know how to wind it up so it just stand there for years.
Believe me that I also want go there right now and start winding it up, but I don't have my own car so I gotta wait my father to let me get his own. And I have other things to do :x I really hope i'll be able to get it today and post some pics.
