In retrospect and with getting older, having a $30K piece is becoming more and more appealing. If I could start over again, I would probably have two watches totalling around $30K. A Day-Date and a SS Submariner/Explorer II or GMT Master II.

I am contemplating on streamlining my current collection of nine Rolex watches down to two, maybe three in the near future and using the funds received from the sales towards my Day-Date.

...but then you would have to trade in those pieces with a sentimental value attached, which is the only reason, at least for me, of making a move to one or two watches.

I have found that after 3-4 watches the less loved ones do not get anywrist time and end up sitting alone. I am currently trimming my collection down from 5. Get 3 you love and wear the heck out of them.

Agreed. All of my watches have some sort of sentimental attachment, but some are getting neglected and do not see as much wrist time as others, especially since adding the BLNR and the LV this year. The decision to streamline the collection is not one I am going to jump on quickly and with little thought. It will be done over the course of time.

Probably not a bad idea to do so. I think I will wait until the honeymoon phase wears off on my 2014 purchases and go from there.

Just did this with half the budget, but I'd get three watches with 30k

Sea Dweller 4000' 16600 or 116600 - every day wear
Yachtmaster 116622 Blue Dial
High Complication JLC or Glashutte Original in Steel

A day-date in plat with a light blue dial is hard to beat and a georgeous watch all around. On the other hand, that budget opens up a nice possibility to put together a fun rolex collection. For the later I like an classic 36mm Exp1, a GMT either classic or current, a sea dweller classic or new, maybe a Daytona or a Exp2 Polar and or a SubND. That covers the Rolex basics. You could of course burn the budget on a Mil-Spec Sub or other rare classic...but I think at least a second watch is in order for that budget. Great conundrum...

Buy the very best watch you both love and can afford - period. If you have money left over, great! If not, you can always save for your next.

Anything worth doing is worth overdoing. A super car is better than ten junkers.

If I had 30k I'd be after either a PF5227 (actually $30k wouldn't be enough *sigh*), or a YG GMT with a green dial.

You can always buy your next watch later.

Plus also, if you get the massive ticket item out of the way first, it's far easier and cheaper getting your fillers down the track.

A PF5227 man... Cmon you know it makes sense.

I just had that...and I bought one. Don't regret it. Quality over quantity.
