Vintage Rolex Movement help
I have a rolex speedking 6430. The watch just got serviced at a local watch shop about two weeks ago. The watch runs for about 19 hours and then stops... If I shake the watch without turning the crown, it starts up again and runs for about 6ish more hours. Why is it doing this?

might not be fully wound? Do you leave it sitting somewhere for 19 hours, or is this with use?

I wake up, fully wind it and then wear it. Take it off at the end of the day and when I wake up in the morning itll show it stopped at like 2am. The day I picked it up from the repair shop, it was still ticking the next morning so it ran for almost 24 hrs before timing out. almost everyday since, it has only run for about 18-19 hours. So this morning I shook it out of curiousity and it started ticking and ran about 6 more hours.

What is the problem with it and what should I say when I take it back?

Without knowing what was actually done to the watch there is no accurate answer. There is service and then there is service. Some do little more than change the oil and call it a service. Was the mainspring replaced? Other parts that may have been worn? Hairspring? Sometimes it's best to go the full route. |

Basically....here are the symptoms.... Watch stops ticking about 3/4 of the way through a full days wind of the crown 40-50 cranks. Requires shaking to finish the last 1/4. Service or not, does anyone know what would cause this?

I'd guess worn out parts that should be replaced starting with the mainspring.. With all respect that doesn't sound like much of a service.

What is the cost of a mainspring replacement? Ya im not ever going to this guy again. Im just not in a position financially where I can pay rolex $700 to service an $800 watch

I think I would send a PM to one of the trusted watch repair guys on the forum and ask RIKI might be a place to start. Genuine parts and a solid reputation.

Fully wind your watch and let it sit. An older movement should last 30-35 hours on a full wind. They will all start up again after a shake - that frees up the mainspring in the barrel and also breaks any geartrain torque lock. This is not part of your 35 hour power reserve, it is just a physics phenomena.

Ill take the watch off tomorrow, let it run, shake it out if necessary and get you a run time. Assuming we basically need an overhaul, any recommendations on a reasonable repair person that is ok with vintage rolex and is prefereably continental US?
