Looking to buy my 1st: Looking for opinions
So I've spent a lot of time looking and have come down to 2 watches. I know they're way different, but would love to hear some opinions from you guys that know Patek's better than I do.
1) Patek Philippe Calatrava Automatic Grey Dial 18 kt White Gold Mens Watch 6000G-010 2) Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164A-001 While I love the other watches and will add to my collection at some point, these are the only ones I'm considering. Thanks! |

For me it boils down to look and comfort. While I love some of the 37mm-38mm Pateks the 6000 isn't one of them. The 40.8mm of the 5164a is nice for a sports/travel watch. I also like the everyday nature of the rubber strap on the 5164a vs leather. Still... the 5164a is a steep price for a steel Patek.
Now if it was a 5164a vs a 5227r... that'd be a tough choice for me. |

I have the aquanaut and I love it. I also loved the 6000g in pictures and in the case. But, when I put it on, I found it too small. Also, my OCD started honing in on the shorter-than-typical hour/min hands and I can't get over that.

I have the 5167a and would take the 5164 between the two. Mainly because I prefer sport watches to dress.

Do you travel extensively ? If not, I would advise against the 5164 and go with the 5167. It is not as bulky and looks / wears better IMHO. It's also significantly less if $$ is an issue. Even if $$ is not an issue, it is hard to justify that price for the complication unless you travel worldwide and don't carry an iPhone. As for the 6000, if you have not seen it in person, I would. It is busy and at 37mm, I would personally opt for the 38 or 39mm version instead with a cleaner dial.

I'd get the 5164. Even if you don't travel, I think the added complication is nice and very well executed.

I think the Calatrava 6000 is a design you have strong feelings for one way or another. If your impressions are strong positives, then it's a precious metal Calatrava option. The 5164 has a cool sports look to it, a very comfortable rubber strap like the 5167 and the dual time function is useful if you travel a lot. Advantage 5164 in my book.

As some people have mentioned above, if you have tried on the 6000G on your wrist and you love the watch, then you know the answer to your own question. To many people, the 6000G dials is too busy for a classic dress watch and is not a common first Patek watch. Have you tried on the other Calatrava watches? Only you know why the 6000G stood out amongst the other Calatrava choices. One positive aspect of this watch is that it has a deployment clasp which is typically $3K more than a pin buckle that most Calatravas come with.
The 5164A is a sports watch that is useful for people who travel across time zones. Thierry Stern likes to wear this watch when he travels and it is quite convenient for that purpose. It also has the night/day feature which is helpful when you have traveled across the globe and you want to call home and quickly check if it is day or night back home. |

Consider the 5167R, Simple , clean dial, with a mesmerizing RG/chocolate dial combo.
Good luck !
