A lot of scammers masquerade as trusted sellers using email addresses with one off names, or different server addresses.

Example, people using the same first name but different server: johnsmith@aol.com instead of johnsmith@gmail.com.

Example 2, people use slightly different first names: johnsmith1@aol.com or j0hnsmith@aol.com instead of johnsmith@gmail.com.

Thus, you may think it is a trusted seller, and you may contact people and get amazing feedback, but you aren't really dealing with the trusted seller, but instead a scammer using a trusted seller's feedback.

1) Always ask the person to send a picture of the watch set to two different times of your choosing.

2) If it is a trusted seller, go to the person's website and contact the person there, or check the e-mail address on multiple forum feedbacks and contact him/her through the main e-mail address he/she uses to confirm (or to warn the real seller about what is happening).

Number one eliminates scammers who don't have the watch immediately. Number two allows you to confirm it is the trusted seller if you aren't sure of the watches provenance. Still, better to get a consensus from a few experts about an expensive piece. Sometimes experts can be wrong based on pictures, or, sadly, more interested in you buying a piece from him/her, or his/her circle, than from another seller.

No need to feel like an idiot! Scammers can be very savvy and most importantly you did your due diligence.

Yes, we are very lucky that Q stepped up but I believe the truth would have come out anyway. The "seller" happened to give you some very recognizable pics from HQ Milton.

Just out of curiosity, what was the price? Was it a "too good to be true price"? Or in line with current pricing trends?

Well, to be honest the price was too good to be true. Seller was asking for USD 8100 shipped. I've seen a similar watch go for ~ EUR 13.500 here in the EU.

The hands can be fixed. The original Bart you posted had the hands fixed and they look great.

Yes, $8000 is way, way, way too good to be true. That should have been the first alert to an issue.

Opinions on a 5513 Bart Simpson

There was no ad that I know of. Seller emailed me, I'm guessing he'd seen one of my other posts here on trf. I made a WTB a while back looking for a gilt 5513. I had completely forgotten about it till he wrote.

Jeez.. he trawled the net and targeted you from an old wtb. Not even a for sale ad. The blatant, arrogant nerve. And using such obviously recognisable photos from a well-known seller. Add stupid to that.

Seems like a coordinated effort. Thank god I had the combined brainpower of TRF at my disposal. Nothing like the Vintage Rolex Hivemind(tm) to flush out these scammers :-)

Makes my skin crawl to think somebody is trolling the net looking at wtb ads just to scam somebody. Then dumb enough to use Hq Milton pictures. I always wondered why people would add there name tag to pictures...for this exact reason. Glad it worked out for you Jesper.

I dont get how in an age of HD video conferencing and snapchat, facetime and whatsapp and skype and all that that you don't verify on a live video conference something you're going to spend a huge wad of cash on....

buy the seller - always ask for photos with a newspaper with today's date on - a refusal or stalling to do a quick skype would be a good indication of a duff seller

also hope we have all ordered pizza to his address and signed up the bank details for re-ocurring charitable donations all over Hawaii
