Daytonas - Strap or Steel?

Hey All,

Looking at a TT Daytona vs. a YG Daytona with the leather strap. Any strap wearers in here?

I wear my ExpII on a strap more than I do on the bracelet. Mind, the price diff between a TT Daytona and a gold Daytona on a strap is pretty big.

If I was going for a D, I would be inclinded to go TT, and then you can wear it on the bracelet OR a strap!

I was told by the AD that the strap and TT bracelet are not interchangeable on the Daytona. Do you think he's putting me on to get me to pay up for the YG?

Hello Franklin and welcome to our friendly little madhouse. Stick around, post often and join the fun.

As for Daytonas and straps, this is the only way to go:

or if you prefer black (as I do):

The AD is full of crap. The Daytona, like all Rolex watches have a lug width of 20mm. ANY 20mm strap fit a Daytona, YG, WG, TT or SS.

Now, I am sure Rolex has made the gold Daytona cases different such that you may not put a SS or TT bracelet on a gold Daytona.

But if you get a TT, its easy to pop the bracelet off and put it on a strap. I would suggest getting a deployment clasp for the strap as it finishes it off nicely. Futher, Rolex DO sell straps and deployments, if you want to keep it all factory.

Interesting.....

He told me if I did something like that it would have to be after market....

I'll have to ask him some more questions....thanks for the tip!

Any time. Like I said, the width on the gold, SS and TT Daytona is 20mm. ANY 20mm strap, Rolex or otherwise will fit it.

I currently swap two straps periodically on my ExpII without an issue. It gives you some variety and can make the watch look very different.

So If I order one of the new Datejust straps it will work? That's fantastic!

I dunno if a DJ will work. As long as the gap between the lugs is 20mm, it will work.

I agree with Ed. I would not put my SS Daytona on a strap, but I like the Gold Daytona on a leather band.

Not a lover of the modern day Daytona strap or steel, but agree with Atomic any 20mm strap will fit.

I agree with JJ, and have one to prove it. I personally don't think a strap is appropriate for a "sport watch". The only watch I have on a strap is a Cartier Tank/w brown alligator strap, and it is worn very infrequently. I don't like to get a strap wet - seems to make a mess after awhile. Metal bracelets all the way for me!

Doesn't the dealer mean the end links?

When dealers say 'you can't put a strap on an SS DJ' what they mean is 'we don't do an SS end link, so if you put a strap on it'll look ugly and unfinished'

I'm guessing it's the same with the Daytona. Really bugs me because I love the new White gold DJ on a strap, but why pay thousands more for white gold? - in Steel it would kick ass!

I wonder how much the white gold end links, strap and clasp cost? - my guess is a lot, and they'll only sell the end links if you have the right watch - anyone ever tried?

Perhaps I'll stick with the TT Daytona, save the extra $5K, and get the SS Sub as I could not deide between that and the SS GMT, so this way I get all 3!

I don't like the polished center links of the Daytona bracelet. Such a scratch magnet. I wish the bracelet and the bezel were brushed. I had an SS Daytona twice and sold them both. Just couldn't become a fan, and honestly I have no use for a chronograph.

Yeah, but it looks so damn GOOD when it is kept polished!

Actually, I have a creme that is designed for the bright metal on the back of an iPod (I have three of 'em), and with just a bit of gentle attention when cleaning the watch, I keep it shiny and totally scratch-free (1997 vintage Daytona).

See pics in this thread: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=4479

Here's what I might do....stay with the TT Daytona, save the 5K, put that towards the SS Sub, and switch over the Black SS GMT to a Black/Red GMT....for variety.....

In the end, the line up will be a SS Black Sub Date, a SS Black/Red GMT and a TT White Dial Daytona!

What do y'all think??
