Fake Patek on eBay

I normally don't worry about the plethora of fakes on ebay... I will however make an exception for this one as it appears to be fooling many punters.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/400995053...617&rmvSB=true

I haven't wasted my time checking the numbers with the manufacturer as I am sure its crap... they are reasonably convincing to most.

Beware of complicated vintage pateks.... they have been reproducing them in china for some time now.... $4500us to convert a Valjoux 23 into a Patek 130..... about 10k for a complete watch.....the newer versions are even more convincing...

Be careful.

a spin on a confidence game...

it is used to gain confidence in the buyer by offering a thread of concern and disclosure… by time the buyer realizes it is a fake the money is long gone.

The buyer will not be paying via PayPal at that price point, with wire transfer the only other option, so buyer will have no options for getting their money back.

Those big, fat, new blue subdial hands at 3 and 9 look totally out of place on that watch.

If they would only bother to take a look at this sellers history nobody has any business buying something of this significance from this seller in the first place. Most of their positive ratings are from buying items from other sellers. One of the things the seller sold was a car bumper.

Same here. Seems my only option would be to buy from the best and trust. That doesn't come cheap and sort of ruins the "hunt."

I am not a buyer in this area, and while finishing is not to what I have in my Patek today I would not know how well they were finished in the past, so I would assume this to be OK, that said I would never buy a vintage Patek on Fleabay

This appears to be real. The movement clearly is identical to the real deal just repaired a bit. Here is a photo that I rotated so it can be compared to the eBay one. Clearly the hands do not look right but with so few made, who knows what might have appeared or have been replaced.

Great post! Thanks for the pictures
However, play spot the differences and you can clearly see that the workmanship of pic one is in another league compared to pic number two.
Damn good copy. But a fake

It appears to have some authentic parts but it also clearly has non authentic parts. Is this a ploy to make it look real from some scavenged parts or is it a real and was repaired with lousy parts? Closer inspection would be needed than some eBay pictures to make that determination.

Here is another image of a real one to see the normal variability between authentic watches.

As fake - based on case engraving (including serial number which has been copied from a different watch), hands, pushers and buckle. Movement number is also a carbon copy. As for whether any parts are authentic, should we care given how many components are not? Moot question now - Hodinkee contacted ebay, who in turn contacted the seller. Seller posted an update that he would be ending auction because he'd "been informed" that an expert had alleged it was a fake. Auction link is down now.

So nice of Hodinkee to credit me for bringing this to the attention of potential purchasers...... NOT!!!

I have little doubt there would have been no story had I not started this post.

The vender was well aware of what he had... I contacted him shortly after it was listed. He never got back to me.

Thank you Hodinkee...... great journalism..... the blind leading the blind!!!

I don't know if the author got it from you or not but every week Hodinkee posts a buyer beware of a fake watch on ebay through their "bring a loupe" series.

Of course they got it from here... they probably scan the forums looking for anything of interest.... they would be stupid if they didn't.

Id be careful of Hodinkee's "bring a loupe", ive seen them recommend real dogs of watches.....

Having said the above..... they have gotten better over the years but I wouldn't place much weight in their blog.

I have no doubt this is true. Good investigative work either way
