Lord Elgin Shockmaster

My father has lived an interesting life, for a Depression kid from the Texas panhandle. Today he gave me his old, non-running Lord Elgin Shockmaster. It's 14k gold filled, and was an award for winning a pistol match in 1958, sponsored by the Army Times. I would like to get it fixed up and running if possible. Does anybody know anything about this watch- the movement, if there are other movements that might fit if this can't be repaired, what horologists might work on it, and so on?

I'll post a pic later.

Do you know of a reputable watch maker in your area/Arlington..? Looks like quite a few in the Arlington area..
That would be my first step, to check a few out!
There may be a few members here on TRF from the area that may know of one..??
Anyone from the Arlington area out there that could assist...??

Do you think Phil Riddely could help? He did great on my dad's 1016. If this is 't what he does, maybe he could direct me?

Definitely alot of movements, used watches available, maybe cheaper to buy a running watch and have the dial and hands switched than to repair movement.
I would guess you could pick up a running watch in the $25-75 range.

In looking for info, I have seen dozens of images (eBay, watchuseek) of Lord Elgin Shockmasters with a sub second hand, and none like mine, with the second hand centered with the hours and minutes. So, either it is rarer, or so poorly made that few survived.

Also, I am sure it will cost more to fix it than it will be worth, but I'll do it anyway. I mean- it's my dad's watch. It's not like there is a store or website selling your dad's watch.

Send it to Mark at www.thewatchdoctor.com. Check his website and check his work on Facebook. He's done about a dozen vintage watches for me. I plan on sending him two Rolex's soon for overhaul.

Most Elgins have a 3 digit reference number on the movement.
If you open the back and get that number, then just search Elgin and refwrench number on ebay.
Should be able to find plenty for parts.

Finding parts is one thing, doing the repair is another...unless you are capable to do so.
I have my grandfather's old Hampden pocket watch that wasn't running and had my watchmaker
do the repairs. Wanted it as original as possible and working. ...just because. .!
If you're not a watchmaker, try and find one, imo.
Nice looking watch.
I have my dad's old Elgin. I'll attach a pic later...
Good luck...

Phillip Riddely is on it now! He opened it up, and the movement is an Elgin 716 21 jewel movement.

Yes, I am fortunate enough to live in Arlington, the same town as Watchmakers Intl. Phillip restored my Rolex 1016. He took a look at it and agreed to restore the Lord Elgin. It was his initial impression that the non-functioning was due to lack of service (basically, Dad, a young SFC at the time, stopped getting it seviced after kids started getting born).

Side note- I am an aerospace engineer and we use "Clean Rooms" (shop areas with controlled access, controlled ventilation, controlled temperature, and strict rules of behavior in order to perform delicate operations that would be jeapordized by the slightest contamination of a foreign object). The WI shop is like a clean room- everything controlled, with a near OCD level of cleanliness and strict organization. Plus with really cool Rolex (their specialty) stuff.

..
That Is great news. Something as special as that piece needs to be serviced and brought back to life. Since you used WI before, you know your watch is in good hands. Kudos to you.
.
Just looked any Dad's, it has a 673 movement at 17 jewels..
My Mom gave it too my Dad in 1957 for their Anniversary..

Jatco, that is a really nice watch. The engraving and significance makes it an heirloom, a keeper, in my opinion.
