i told my girlfriend about this post. she laughed but then suddenly turned serious. she's giving me a week to decide. if i "fail" she now says i forfeit the watch to her and she'll sell it, ouch.
the idea of the watch is pretty promising but it's hard to quit when your not ready or don't really want to. things are kinda complicated for me right now. i know it's good for my health and all but it will take a lot of will, lots and lots of it..... for the record... i will seriously consider it and give it lots of thought... thanks for all your replies and your concerns for my health..

ps. just to rub it in my girlfriend tricked me into passing by an ad and take a look inside....but i refused to enter with a tear in my eye

pps. i'll let you guys know what i decide on

This is the most serious post I ever made on this forum. The regulars know what a clown I am. Forget about the watch. Just do it for the woman in your life. All the things that are published about smoking are true. I won't get nasty here but you'll catch my drift. Do it for her, she loves you and this will be a great gift to her. It's sooooo easy for a non smoker to say this but I've got my own chalenge here, it's in the good food and wine department. It's very hard to cut down or quit all together. Do it bro, do it for her. The watch is just an added bonus

Actually, Craig, I've quit three times. Once for 5 years, second time for 12 years, and now it's been almost 4 years. This time I think it's for good, though. I am now aware that I can't smoke socially. I am a smokoholic. Knowing that makes it easier to stay away. And fortunately, by now I don't miss it anymore. Although, I have to admit, the smell of cigarette smoke is kind of nice, but not enough to lure me back again.

Fortunately, I'm not an alcoholic. Otherwise those 30 bottles of single malt in my liquor cabinet would go to waste.

I say more power to them. And do not give that up - for Lent or any other reason.

Bogey;

Thank your GF and then respectfully decline her offer. At this point in time you are essentially guaranteed to fail in your attempt to quit smokiing.

Now that was 'encouraging' if you ask me, Mink. Quite the pessimist, aren't you?

A smoker can always come up for a good reason to smoke.
That won't change.
Quit.
Then tell her the money she promised you for a watch is hers to spend doing something she'd like to do.

Bogey,

I quit 6 years ago (well the last time anyway, I consider all the times I tried to quit as practice), and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
I am a person crimes detective (Sex crimes, Homicide, Robbery), and I am on a SWAT team. I know about high stress situations, and smoking only adds to them.
The whole argument about stress and family problems is BS. I used it also for years, but ultimately it is a crutch. The calming effect you feel is your body's response to feeding the addiction. When you can not smoke, the addiction adds stress on top of the stress from the situation. Sometimes it feels like a 600lb gorilla on your shoulders. Not letting someone smoke is one of the interrogation tricks we use with bad guys. After your smoke is done, the problems are still there. When you kick the habit, you will be better able to handle uncomfortable situations. Not to mention you'll have a new Rolex. Overall it is a win/win, plus you'll have more money and smell (both your sense of smell and how you smell to others), taste, and feel better.

At first you'll crave a smoke whenever stressed, or during social situations you usually smoked in, but it will pass. In the last 6 years I have had alot of cravings, but only smoked 1 cigarette. It was when one of my team mates got killed on a SWAT call. About half way through I "kicked myself" and put it out. It didn't help change anything and only made me feel sick. I have not had a craving since.

Good Luck!

P.S. I used Zyban "Welbutrin", and it worked well.
