Profit Differential on Gold vs SS
Has anyone ever figured this out?
It be interesting to see what is the cost per ounce one plays for the gold in a YG GMT-IIC. It may be impossible to do precisely without disassembly, but maybe an indirect calculation in possible. Nearly all the pieces (movement, crystal, etc) are the same in the SS and gold variants. The price of the PLT numeraled bezel on the SS model could even be slightly more than the gold version. The weight of the case and bracelet would seem to be the major points. I know PLT is a pain in the butt to work with, but I would think the cost of machining / stamping / forging, etc of YG would be very close to SS. Agree? We're talking $25,550 for the YG model. Unsure of the SS model after the price increase, but I thought is was just under $7,000. So that's roughly an $18,500 difference. Even based on a wild ass guess, that's some pretty pricey 18kt gold. 24kt gold at about $970 an ounce, so even assuming 18kt gold is worth $900 that would be 20+ ounces worth of gold and we know that's not the case by a long shot. These YG watches weigh in around 200 grams? Not sure. Maybe 170 grams in the case and bracelet? About 6 ounces of gold maybe? $2,700 per ounce? Again, just guess estimates on the weights, etc. Anyone ever figure this out? Any thoughts? |

Have you factored in dealer mark-up?
Bo posted a while back on dealer mark-up versus production cost. If you do a search you will probably find the post. AJF. |
