Help! Crazy looking vintage Rolex - Please help identify.

Hey all. A friend of mine owns this very unusual looking and very old Rolex. I've never seen anything like it. By any chance is anyone here familiar with it? I would really appreciate your thoughts on this watch and how it came to be. Thanks in advance!
Scott

Not Rolex.

I do... their trademarked logo on the dial and movement, so badly duplicated that it is not likely to cause confusion and cannot possibly be considered a spurious mark... or can it? That watch got butchered... whatever it used to be.
