Fun at the AP Boutique

Grand complication...1 of 1??

Was told this piece is 1 of 1, but not found anything about it online...notice the red number "1" in the lower-left sub-dail...anyone with deep AP knowledge able to provide additional detail. The sales staff was helpful, but not overly knowledgeable about the piece - store manager was out so I couldn't ask.

Maybe the caseback would have some info on this piece. Any pics of the back.

An odd one that - the split second perpetuals normally have a minute repeater as well (reference 25865 for example).

The red 1 is to distinguish it from the 31 with the 1's being back to back.

Thanks for the replies gents....only 1 pic of the back as the lighting in the store wasn't great - kept getting reflections.

No, this one clearly isn't a minute repeater at all...

Clearly its hard to tell as the minute repeater can sometimes be a bit obscured depending on the angle of the photo. There isn't a good picture of the left side of the case.
For example, 2 pictures... same watch... minute repeater

And it is strikingly similar to the watch posted by the OP. Maybe he can clarify.

Also, based on this video, the museum director of AP states that ALL grand complications have a minute repeater, split seconds, chronograph, perpetual calendar. If they are missing any of those complications then they do not call it a grand complication. The OP's watch clearly states it a "grand complication" on the case back.
https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/in...udemars-piguet

The 1972-2012 engraving on the back dates it as a 40th anniversary royal oak, and AP's website says the 40th anniversary grand complication has all of the above functions.

So if its labeled a grand complication and is lacking a minute repeater then it is truly one of a kind, otherwise I'm fairly sure its this model 25865ST.OO.1105ST.02

After doing some research I believe that it is a 40th Anniversary GC with Minute Repeater - so not a 1 of 1, but a gorgeous piece all the same.

Thank you all for the comments and further education

just to add some more confusion to the 1 of 1, harrods also said it was 1 of 1 with their model too

Maybe since they were a made to order piece, then all of those produced were considered a unique piece? I have no idea

Have to say it's a gorgeous watch in person, but the older model clasp is a let-down....the gent who's picking it up in Riyadh should be asking for the updated model IMHO...I'm sure with the $260,000 price tag AP will be happy to throw it in for free

It's a grande comp. you can see the two wire gongs wrapped around the movement in the pic. These are what the hammers hit to make the chiming sound.

$260k is a steal! Most grande comps retail for around $700k. I was talking to an AD last week while on vacation and he sold a ROO grande comp in the mid $500ks.

Here are some others http://www.luxurybazaar.com/subcateg...lications.html

The platinum RO grande comp is my all time favorite AP.

If I bought a "1 of 1" model, and some random Joe off the street could ask them to make another for him, I'd be pretty upset!

There are 1/1 grand comps out there and you can have one made by AP...will cost you seven figures.

While I was visiting AP, I saw several 1/1 and 1/3 pieces being hand built by the GC group (it's like 5 people).

That was my favorite part of the AP visit. Although I missed the APRP tour that you did. So cool how open the watchmakers were with showing off their art and letting you play with $1m+ pieces. Also loved the special wooden piano shaped boxes that are made with dense wood from the Swiss alps to help magnify the sound of the minute repeater. Amazing engineering.

That will be an amazing day to be sure - I find RM's are too big for my wrist, but absolutely love the craftsmanship and unique materials....hmmmm, maybe the Baby Nadal would be okay.....
