How does it work? Air/Water-proofness with crown not screwed down
Basically what I want to know is how air/waterproof is the watch when the crown is unscrewded? I leave a few Rolexes in the safe and since I wind them about once a week, I don't bother screwing down the crown every time. I figure that there are seals inside the crown tube that prevent humidity and dirt to penetrate the watch even when the crown is left unscrewed (just like every watch with a regular crown), but is this really the case?
Thanks for clarifying this. |

In short, yes, for Twinlock and Triplock crowns/tubes/stems, there are o-rings and gaskets that remain engaged when the crown is unscrewed.
If you were going into deep dive underwater, I'd suggest more than 3 ATM, the crown must be screwed in to ensure maximum water resistance.

3 ATM is nearly 100 feet! You'd have no worries leaving your crown unscrewed at that depth? I could see a in a shower or jump on the pool with no worries - but anything below 10-20 feet? You're kidding right? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Twin lock - one seal in the stem and one in the top of the crown.
Trip lock - 2 seals in the stem and one in the top of the crown (and an additional one around the crown tube threads) |

The pushers on the Daytona are a good example. They only have a single O-ring around the stem and are waterproof to 100 meters without a screw-on cap.
