$4,000 for my Sub?

I walked by Tourneau in Houston the other day and thought I'd check out the GMTIIc. The rep. told me that I could get a free appraisal for my Sub if I wanted to consider trading it in, so I thought why not.

They said my Y-serial Sub was worth $4,000 right now, so I'm just wondering... is that reasonable?

That's a great quote for Y serial.

Wow! Was that for a trade in? Does not leave them much room to make margins on resale.

That's a good price if you can actually get that much for it on a resale. Were they prepared to pay you that price on a possible trade-in for a new watch of your choice?

You're right Scott but maybe they do it like car dealers do. They show you on paper that they're giving you $4k but in reality they're only giving you $3k

I know on trades that one of the AD's I deal with won't give the discount on the new purchase.

With Tourneau, you never knoe what they are trying to do! They must do a lot of volume for Rolex and that's why Rolex sticks with them, Tourneau has the worst repuatation of any AD I know.

From what I've read about them you're right on

Your thoughts on why Rolex sticks with them are very good also. Can't imagine any other reason why

I've also read a lot of not so nice things about Tourneau, mostly on this forum :P

JJ, that $4,000 quote was for a trade in, after I had expressed my potential interest in trading my Sub for a GMT-IIC.

On the other hand though, he said the GMT-IIC was $7,000. That's not too good a deal now, is it?

$6,825 is MSRP for a GMT IIc, maybe they bought it before the latest round of price increases....still does not explain the price for your Sub! This is coming from a company who used to sell LNIB "pre-owned" SS Daytonas for $15K.

I encountered the same offer with my sub about 3 weeks ago with a tourneau store in the san fernando valley, ca.

I was really tempted and it was a real generous offer but their mark up on rolex watches is insane.

For example a white dial daytona that goes for about 9k at a AD like ben bridge was at 15,500 there..

As some have mentioned here, it's like buying a car. You get money on your trade in but not on the new purchase, one or the other. The SS Subs are always on demand, and they will get their money one way or another.

If you did not pay that much for your sub, sounds like a great deal if you want a new Rolex from an AD. Again, you can not go wrong.

I also had such an experience at an AD in DC. I had a two tone GMT, that I purchased used for about $2K and I offered for trade for a ladies watch. I looked around and saw a very nice datejust for my wife. The dealer traded straight up and said they could not give me cash in return.

I was happy with the trade.

I considered myself fortunate (not as much as the wife, of course).

I do not know if the datejust, obviously not a fast mover, had something to do with it....

After thinking about this, here is what I think.

They sell you a GMTII for 7K.

You can buy a GMTII elsewhere for $6,825 and after a friendly discount of say 20%, you can pay about $5460.00

$7000
(5460)
--------
$1540.00

The acutal amt they are into your SS sub is $4000-1540=$2460

Now they can sell the SS sub for $3500 or so to someone who is not Rolex savy, basically anyone who would buy from the big T.

All that for $1000 bucks? But you have to remember if a AD can give YOU a 20% discount they must have a bigger margin than that.

Plus they can add it to their sales as another "new" watch sold.
