5712a Versatility and other musings

To piggy back off of my other thread “5164a Versatility”.

How versatile is the 5712a? Namely, could it be worn casually without seeming very out of place? I dress relatively bright and preppy in the summer, so I imagine it would work perfectly with that, but what about with jeans/ darker winter tones?

To admit a sick fantasy: I’ve always though it would be hilarious/badass/awesome to wear a DD40/Nautilus/6263 with a ribbed tank top/basketball shorts/flip flops (I can already hear the pearls being clutched right now).

I guess the heart of these questions is that I’m down to these two (the 5164 and the 5712). And it’s basically a question of practicality vs adoration. And a large part of me is thinking “you only live once”

I’m keeping the 1815, so it’s gonna be either 1815 and 5712 or 1815 and 5164, and a steel Rolex/Tudor a little bit down the road until a white D500/LVc becomes available.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback/thoughts/advice.

I've done that with my 15202. Can't see why it can't be done with a 5712. Rock what you feel comfortable with - it's all about the confidence!

I think this is whats keeping me wanting the 5711 White before going for the '12
Personally I feel '12 the dial makes it too formal/traditional with the moonphase etc.

That said between the 5712 and the 5164 - I'd go Nautilus as it sings to me more than the Travel Time Aqua

You're overthinking this. You can wear your 1815 with a tank top and flip flops too. Get whichever you like best.

5712/1A is the most versatile watch I have ever worn (or seen). Just the other day, I wore it with athletic shorts, flip flops and a tee shirt, and the “sports watch” dna just took over and it looked completely at ease. Then the next day, I wore it with a dark suit and tie and the dial and fine finishing came to the front and it looked completely at ease. It really is amazing.

The 5712 looks MUCH better than a 5164 with a suit (and you’ll want to wear it more formally from time to time even if you have an 1815), and looks just as good with shorts as a 5164, although it definitely gives off a different look. It is more classy looking whereas the 5164 is more sporty.

Both are obviously great watches, but to answer your question directly, the 5712 is much more versatile.

I think of watches wearability sort of on a 10 point scale with 10 being a tuxedo and 1 a bathing suit. Your 1815 covers the 6-10 range (but can be stretched to 5-10). The 5712 covers 3-9 (can be stretched to 2-9) and the 5164 covers 2-5 (and can be stretched to 1-6)

That doesn’t mean all three couldn’t be worn with a bathing suit or a tuxedo, but more of where they fit ideally.

My scale:

10 - tuxedo
9 - dark suit and tie
8 - more casual suit with or without tie
7 - sport jacket
6 - long-sleeve dress shirt
5 - rolled up sleeves on dress shirt
4 - short sleeve polo shirt
3 - nice shorts and t-shirt
2 - athletic shorts and t-shirt
1 - bathing suit and no shirt

Hope this helps!

Get the 5712/1a and wear it with whatever you want.

I wear it to work (a suit on some days, otherwise, dress pants and a button down most other days). I also wear it on the weekends with shorts, t-shirts and flip flops (SoCal living). I personally won't draw a line on a SS sports watch (even if it's a Nautilus) that prohibits me from wearing it with shorts and t-shirts. It's my watch, I'll wear it whenever I want...

I don't own a 5712 (but want one hah!).....but I can tell you I'm not the most formal dresser living a very active lifestyle.....and I wear my DD40 and 6265 anytime/anywhere with anything. Can't imagine the 5712 being much different.

I would get a Naut before an Aqua, and if the 5711 white is still on the cards then I'd get the 64.

I have worn my 5712 in basketball shorts with flip flops and a 15 year old faded t shirt with holes in it and mustard stains.

I have done the same with my 5116R which many consider to be a dress piece only.

I have worn my 5712 with everything and nothing! Most people don't have a clue what you're wearing on your wrist. I know and that's what is important to me.

i agree in principle actually. Since i have other watches better suited for certain situations i tend to wear watches accordingly and try to match the wardrobe style to the watch rather than wearing one or two with everything.

My lines i draw are more for maximizing the best occasion for each watch and not necessarily saying this can't be worn with this or that.

Do it!

If I had asked for opinions on wearing my 5167 with a tux, I'd never worn it.

During the day my 5167 goes to the pool, at night to the gala.

Hell yes.

I wear both my 5712 and 5726 1/a to the pool, in shorts, in the ocean etc. that’s what it was made for. They do just fine in ANY environment. The notes of ybe world have changed so a Vintage Daytona is now a black tie watch along with about any Nautilus. There are no longer any rules when it comes to what sports watch goes with what manner of dress. It’s all about what the weaerer wants to wear.

I wear my 5712/1a in the kitchen for a year or so.. beat the living hell out of it in a commercial kitchen

The bezel took most of the beating n the casing n bracelet too. It went thru both hot n cold water, oil n detegent n flour, banged countless time on all the stainless steels tops n doors n took all the shocks n G force from all the chopping n a couple of falls (me slip n fell)..

surprisingly thou, the nautilus didn’t miss a bit. Tells accurate time and the date n power reserve function perfectly.

So to answer you question, 5712 is much thougher than you think.

Good luck with your hunt! Looking forward to your incoming soon!

HAGWE
