Thinking of trading in the 2016 E400 on a BMW! Am I going backwards?

Love the E400 comfort but the wife wants her own Convertible

For 50 yr olds is BMW M4 Convert going backwards? Lol. There is also a 2016 E400 convertible Merc...

No M4 convert but we could order one.

Or maybe a 718 Boxster?

I like BMWs better. Their sport line is sportier, and you can get em in stick shift.
Have had a few of their M cars, have an M235i now.
Drivers cars.

My brother just moved from Mercedes to BMW, and he just says “they’re different “

Both high quality. Come down to style.

It is a matter of preference. Both are good looking vehicles and you could discuss performance and appearance but it all comes down to what you and the wife want. Go drive the BMW and see if it works.

F80/82/83 M3 trounces the e400 in every freakin category. Now if you want to look at the C63 or E63 vs M3 or M5, then you have a more complicated comparison. This one is a no brainer.

I’d go for the M over a non-AMG Mercedes.

Why not get a Boxter S? If you really want to odd ball it, a nice Z4 M and I’m certain that the values will hold in the event you decide to move on from it.

Speaking from personal experience. The 2016 E400 will lack in technology vs. BMW M4. The Merc lagged upgrading that model. The Merc comfort will be slightly better as I find BMW only steps it up in the 6 series and up for comfort.

If you were getting the new 2018 E63 AMG, this would be a different conversation.

I daily drive my M4 except in the winter and love it. I would not consider a switch unless for an Amg model.

For me, there is enough technology in all of these cars. I wouldn't buy based on the tech. The driving dynamic is the reason for me. MB for luxury but The BMW will give you a much more spirited drive than the E 400 all day. I would take an M over a non AMG MB all day.

I am a big fan of BMW, however their current models are ages behind the other manufacturers.

Sat in a 650 convertible, a 109k car, that didn't feel much different than my 50k 3 series.

Test drove the Audi and it was worlds better. S5 is a new model, the convertible has a massage in the seat...
A7 incredible, but the last year of a model.

If I hadn't gone with the 911, i would have taken either of the Audis 100 times before a BMW.

True. What I meant is some of technology can actually be very limiting. For instance, phone connectivity and GPS on that year are not up to par. I use my phone a lot and it was a big problem for me. This model has the same interface as my old 2012 SL63 AMG.

I fell in love with the Audi and bought the S7 but after a year and a half of driving it, i see underneath the cover. The finishes are starting to show their lack of quality. I see a lot of the same parts that my brother has on his VW Passat. The quirks of my Audi are hard to get past... seat resetting on its own, HD radio comes on randomly and at random volumes, etc. And if you google, you’ll see it’s a brand issue not that I bought a lemon.

My next car will be back with BMW / Mercedes

Just my 2 cents, drove BMW for years, had 6 different ones, including some M models, I just believe the new versions have lost their way, steering is vague, more mainstream than unique as in the past... Again, just imho.

Never had a merc, and doubt I will, you could look at a Boxster or even a 911 Cab.

You at least owe it to yourself to try them. FWIW, CPO cars have unlimited mileage.

The M4 is a performance car 100%.
If your wife is into that then great, but it could be a bit harsh.

Mercedes cabriolet would be a lot more comfortable.

The M4 is very sporty, with potentially a rougher ride. I daily drive the four door M3 and it's a very "enthusiastic" riding car. I hate the sound the car makes, btw. I had a V8 m3 which sounded glorious- new car sounds embarrassing.

For a weekend car, I would suggest a Porsche...

Interesting. Thank you for sharing that.

My brother in law has the A7 and still loves it. He doesn't drive too much though.

For many years i felt to audi as just a little better VW, but i was so pleasantly surprised when i sat in the a7, just after i test drove the 650. It was a worlds difference between the two. 650 was not a 109k car. period.

A friend recently bought a new M5 and it looks incredible.

Still, that 650 test drive left such a bitter taste. It will take a lot for me to consider another BMW.

We've been Lexus fans since 1990. We've owned 2 LS400s, an LS430, 2 LS460s, an SC430 and currently, an IS250C and an ES350. All have been great cars with very few problems. All have been road cars, even the SC430. They don't compare to a MB or BMW in power or performance, but that's not why we got them.

I'm waiting for the E53 and E53 Cabrio. I love both of our Mercedes but my E550 Coupe is getting up there in miles. My wife loves convertibles so maybe an E53 Cab will find its way into my driveway next year or the following year.

I may be biased here owning a M3 but I say the BMW.

Especially if you enjoy torgue and horsepower you cannot go wrong with the M.

The MB you mention would be a very pleasant ride albeit a bit " dull for me anyways.

With the M it's like pure excitement from the second you start the car till you get to your destination. I've never enjoyed driving or even just sitting in NYC traffic as much as I do now

Good luck with your choice!

I would go 718 without thinking twice unless your wife is a horsepower junkie in which case m4 all the way.

Oh wow, I just did BMW M Track Days, and Audi Driving Experince at COTA Race Track

The Audis were the RS3 and TTRS.
BMW was all the M cars.

Especially dollar for dollars, wouldn't even consider Audi

I'm a boring car buyer also!
