I bought my GMT over the sub after comparing them both side to side. I prefer the complication on the GMT.

It all depends on who is buying. In other words, it's a matter of buyer taste.

When it comes to gold I prefer the GMT.

I can only tell you why I prefer the GMT in full gold. Given the purpose of each of these tool watches, full gold is more appropriate on the GMT for it's intended environments. A precious metal timepiece is a little more relevant to cockpits, airports, offices and hotels than it is to cave diving, ship salvage, or scraping the barnacles off a boat hull. Of course, if you're arriving by sea to a dinner party and wearing a tux under your wetsuit then the YG Sub works quite well.

I really like the blue Sub in YG. But if you're not going for that one, I would have to say GMT.

First of all, most owners of gold sub or gmt already have a few SS tool watches in their collection to do the "dirty" work, so to speak. It's rare that your only watch is a full gold, do-it-all piece.
So when I set out to get a full gold Rolex, it's purely based on aesthetic and not necessarily on its intended purpose. It just needs to look great regardless of the environment I'm in, and any other function/complication is a bonus. To me, a YG gmtIIc looks the best followed very closely by the blue dial YG Subc. (WG Subc is beautiful in it's own right but I think the OP was referring to YG). And since I already have a blue TT Subc the YG GMTc makes the most sense. |

IMO it's not that the YG GMT is more popular. I think the WG SubC is more popular than the YG SubC.

Me too. The only thing with the gold Sub is that the case back is slightly thicker. Otherwise, the case is the same plus I like how the GMT's bezel clicks into place.

I have just been through the selection process deciding between the 116618 sub and the 116718 GMT.
I usually prefer the sub but opted for the GMT in this instance. The main reason was the step between the case and the bracelet on the Sub, it's simply too extreme and makes the watch look top heavy in my opinion. The GMT has just perfect proportions. I'll post some pics soon.

I would take the yellow gold sub with the new sunburst dial.

Well in the "C" models the GMT. Classic bluesy a different story.

Because a gold traveler/pilot watch makes sense and a gold diver doesn't? ;-)

I totally agree with you. I thought I was the only one with this reasoning.
