From 6 to 5...
I've been "collecting" watches for only a short time, but when I started, I couldn't understand why someone would pay the same money for an older "used" watch, when they could get the latest and greatest new model.
A few years later....with the advent of the SS "shortage"....lots of AD bs to deal with....I have come to love and appreciate the 5 digits. I still love my more modern pieces, but there really is something special about the refined simplicity and elegance of the older cases. I'm even starting to think 36mm is the perfect size for me. Anyone else with similar experiences throughout the years? |

Yup. Especially the size issue. I have always preferred the 5-digit Rolex watches to their Ceramic counterparts, but I started this hobby with a 48mm Breitling. Next I went to 44mm and then to 42mm watches. Now I am happily at 40mm and also have a couple 36mm Rolex watches.
Ever tried a plexiglass 4-digit model? If you haven’t.......DON’T......you might end up costing yourself a pile of money.

Funny you should say that...the reason I posted was the latest acquisition of a gold 34mm Date with plexi and I think I'm in love.
The hole just keeps getting deeper and deeper. |

I started w 5 digit DJ’s back when & was out of the R scene for 7-8 years. Then started back to 6 digit SS and now scaled it down to 5 digit models. Something about the previous Gen models are just more appealing to me these days.

Not for me. I like to make my own history with a watch, not wear someone else’s. That’s just me.

They do have an essence about them that I think captures what Rolex was (not fancy man jewlery) much better. However the 6digit clasp is amazing.

I don't know thought I was happy at 40mm but just got the SD43 and really like the way it fits with the wider bracelet.

I keep trying & trying to warm to the 6-digits; especially the "corrected" iterations with less bulky cases. But somehow they aren't "Rolex" anymore. Can't put my finger on it. Like someone or something behind the scenes is just gone, and they can't get it back. Perhaps in another ten years.

I think that both five and six digit models have their plus points. The latter may be better built but that takes nothing away from the older five digit models.

I have a mixture of both 5 and 6 digits in my collection. Each one purchased because I truly liked it and wanted to own it but I do enjoy my 5 digits more nowadays.

I've had my share of vintage pieces and my favorites are ones are Submariners with the thicker acrylic crystals, like on the 1680 and 5512 I had. I also liked the acrylic crystals on my old 1601 Datejusts. Those are special watches, but aside from those, I like the new watches with their maxi dials and heavy clasps.
Ferry Porsche said the best Porsche is the newest Porsche. I kind of feel the same way about Rolex watches.

Actually like different aspects of the 4, 5, & 6 digit models, and I wear all 3.
4 & 5 digits fit my wrist the best! |

My collection alternates 5/6 models:
16610 Kermit / 116610 Hulk 16570 Exp 2 / 216570 Exp 2 16710 BLRO / 216710 BLRO Etc.... I really appreciate both 5 and 6 digit references and go back and forth depending on the day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I’m perfectly happy with Rolex watches produced between 2006 and 2010. This is the sweet spot for me. Latest pre-ceramics available. D,Z,M,V,G serials, depending on the reference. Even some randoms, in the case of the 14060M.

I only own 6 digits. 5 digits predate my collecting. 40mm is my sweet spot. Most 34s are too small for me, I think most 36s are too small in my opinion.
