Some Quartz Love?
Okay, we are all fans of mechanical watches, and on various watch boards I've heard people say that quartz watches "do not have a soul" or some such thing. I've opened a few quartz watches in my time, and most are pretty ugly inside.....like this in my old Longines model 1000:
Here's the front of that watch: But I recently had to replace the battery (shudder ) on my wife's Cartier.....and when I opened it up, I was very pleased to see that some time had been spent on this movement. It's Cal. 690 in her Must de Cartier 21 model that she bought when I bought my YM. This watch retailed for $2,200 Cdn. at that time - I could not convince her to get a mechanical . This is what the watch looks like (off the net as I didn't take a picture of the front): Here is a view just after I removed the case back: And here is a closer view of the movement - nice Côtes de Genève : So, although they can be ugly, there are some quartz movements out there that have had some care taken in their finishing. |

Good post, Al. That Cartier quartz does make the Longines one look pretty crappy by comparison!

Good post Al! I think it is nuts to think a watch can't be great if it is a quartz. I did not used to think that, but I am well beyond that in my WIS life.

Is that the definition of ironic that we spend X amount of K's on these mechanical watches, yet only my $50 dollar G shock is set to an atomic clock and is able to self correct the time, LOL!!

Bob, is the second watch a Bulova? I like the dial alot, it is funky!!
How do you like that Breitling? I actually think that is a very legible looking white dial watch, something that can't always be said.

The first one is the Breitling M-1 SuperQuartz, dead on accurate, big and thick, but not too heavy since it's titanium. I like it. It's sort of a beater to me.
The second one is a Bulova Spaceview (tuning fork) from 1972. They started production in 1960. I don't remember when they stopped. I just had that one cervixed and adjusted to run on the common 1.5v battery instead of the 1.35v mercury battery from the old days. It's a nice vintage piece. Second hand is totally smooth in movement. |

I nearly forgot. Here's the quartz watch that I wear on the beach so I can hear the alarm. I also wear it when I walk for exercise so I can time myself.
