So when is a Rolex considered vintage?
Is there an age when a Rolex goes to vintage status?
10, 20, 25, 30 years? Or does a Rolex have to be as old as JJ and thus "vintage" is a continual moving target? Seriously though, is there an "official" definition of vintage in the Rolex collector's world?

Hi
It is usually all Rolex's with acrylic crystal. Those with sapphire are considered modern. Hope that helps. Simon

I can see the acrylic as a plumb bob now, but what about in 10 years? Some of the sapphire timepieces will surely be vintage by then? No?

Richard, realistically any acrylic crystal Rolex is vintage, but you know you truly have a vintage piece when Rolex refuses to service it anymore!

I view the 16800 sub and the 16760 gmt fat lady as vintage and they are sapphire..
it is a rather loose term the word vintage..I tend to think of any watch older than 20 years as "vintage".. |

Well maybe in 20 or 30 years. Actually the late acrylic crystal watches are border line in my opinion, I mean you wouldn't call a 1984 Ford Escort vintage, but a 1984 Date Just might be called vintage. A car for instance would have to be from the 1960's or earlier to be called vintage. Simon

I will say all with plastic crystals and sapphires with matte dial except the DeepSea.

Err buddies...Orchi has a different perspective about Vintage Rolex watches...
Anything that Rolex has stopped to produce...collectible with higher resale value... n DESIRABLE at the SAME time...are true VINTAGE Rolex... For examples... A Plastic 1601 or 1500 are OLD...Classic...NOT Vintage per se... |

The usual rule of thumb is 25 years old, but I think that a line in the sand isn't always the correct way to label things.
Some say Acrylic crystals are the bench mark, but my 16550 Explorer II is vintage and collectable and has a Sapphire crystal, just as the Highly collectable Vintage 1630 and 1530 DateJust and Date do, Rolex started using Sapphire crystal in the DayDate in 1977 I believe. Tritium dials could also be a bench mark for Rolex watches in the future as they were not discontinued until approx 1998, but Luminova has been in use by some makers for 25 years already making them vintage on the date line ideal. Could it be Matt dials "Vintage" not Gloss with White Gold surrounds "Modern". Back to my 16550 it is Gloss and has White Gold surrounds, but it's vintage. Needless to say we could debate forever, the merits of is it a "vintage" or "Modern" watch. I personally feel it is down to the watch in question being out of production for a decent period and being sought after by collectors. The Zenith Engined Daytona is a good case. Only out of production for 7 years, but highly sought after and quite often refered to as a "Vintage Zenith Daytona". Is it modern or is it vintage??? I'm going to sit on the fence |

How old is your wife and do you call her vintage? Nothing is vintage, just broken in.

Guess that makes my 1977 DateJust 14k/SS vintage. One like mine was termed a
CAL 1570. How can I verify that and what is CAL? |

A few examples for watches I consider vintage, which might not meet others qualifications of vintage: I consider a GMT 16700 from 1989 vintage, and all the GMT 16750's. I would also consider the zenith movement Daytonas vintage if 20 years old and Submariner 1680's, 16800's and 168000. Anyhow, I believe this is a good starting point when looking for something vintage as it has worked for me.
