I'm the fringe on this one. I never liked the 5711 or the 5712. I think the perfect Nautilus is the 5726-0014. It's practical and legible. The 5740 is 'collectible' but the legibility isn't there, IMO.

It's Stern's responsibility to make the tough calls. We all agree it's a tough one because of the halo effect the 5711 has on the brand. But I think PP will be fine as they have plenty of models to interested in and excited about.

If you read other of his interviews you will see he comes across as a very honest and caring person. This was a quote from one of the interviews he gave:

But it’s important that we know we are going to keep them, because it’s the best investment for my family also. I know that if I have Patek Philippe well secured with good reserves, when bad times will come, I can save Patek. Most of the brands today they don’t have any reserves, and I don’t understand that.
How many watch CEOs you have that are openly taking about preparing for the worst? It's obvious he loves the company dearly and does not want a repeat of what led Patek sell to Stern family. I think he is simply sad at AP as another 'family-owned' company of having 'sold out' and started chasing fads and trends.

I've never been on Instagram, I don't know how you work it.

God forbid anyone gets seen in a 5711 and people think he's just a nouveau rich ruffian and not a long time underground gentleman of taste in horology.
Oh the shame.

No one with any integrity wants to be seen as a drug dealer or criminal, but perspective is needed. I've just been running in my Adidas running shoes, if that means people suspect I might be a crack dealer then I'll live with it.
I might wear my Nautilus to work tomorrow, if the board suspect I'm dealing meth to help fund my watch purchases then that sits with them, not me.

I was collecting watches before the internet was a thing, I haven't changed since then and I'm not changing now in case some halfwit thinks I'm a steroid fuelled bank robber based on my watch choices.

The only thing I'm getting fed up with is people that previously wouldn't say anything two years ago suddenly noticing my watch and want a conversation when they have no idea what they're talking about - but they saw one on bloody instagram.

Great post! I've been a watch collector for the past 20 years... Fortunate to have acquired some great pieces and I can relate to some what you're saying. I would like to add my own insight if it's alright: Instagram didn't create demand, it just created awareness because collectors love sharing wrist shots of their timepieces on instagram. That awareness created demand. Then you see posts about what celebrities are wearing across the board from all types of watches and that fueled an industry that previously had to discount. Now men are both making more money and spending it on timepieces as well due to this awareness. I see it no different than a man wanting a nice car like a bmw or benz or a nice house. Most of what we do or wear is for ourselves but not all of it. Some percentage of our purchases have to do with outside perception and that's not a bad thing.

Wear your nautilus or whichever watch you choose with happiness and in good health. We live in a time where watches are being noticed and appreciated more than ever before. Isn't that a good thing? :)

Funny, I have Ben a watch collector for 20 years also. My most frequently worn timepiece is my 5711 white. I think maybe 2 no more than 3 people have even noticed it and all of them knew what a pp is. Hasn’t been my experience that the general public sees them as someone a crack dealer or rapp singer would sport - just my experience. james in San Antonio Tx:-))

James, do you wear your 5990 often? Curious if folks notice that one?

I'm still waiting for someone to notice my 5711. Santa Fe ain't the hippest place, but even so. And there's no yacht clubs here to join so I can get proper attention.

For the past 20 years I've been wearing an Aquanaut (5066 then 5065) and then traded to a Nautilus (5726). Not ONCE someone has ever noticed or commented on my watch (i'm mainly in Europe and North America).
When I had my Aquanaut (and before they were a thing) I used to joke that I could put it in those $10 watch display cases and still find it a week later.
I don't think the average person has any idea what PP is and that's the way I like it :-)

I tried to acquire a Reissue when it was launched and was told that it was for their VIP client and then six months later I was contacted by the AD twice to see if I was still interested to the one they have in-stock. So that pretty much sums up where AP is today.
same happened to me. in the end they tried tu bundle the remaster with various ROs. AP makes some great watches (in the RO collection) but as a watchmaker PP is on an entirely different level, as far as the breadth and depth of the collection is concerned.
