Just got this in, only ever tasted the Lagavulin distillers edition (at the distillery last year) and the nikka

That's a good selection, Bas. WT 101 is one of my go-to bourbons. Redbreast is a very good Irish whisky. I like the 12 and the 12 cask strength better than the 15 (value based, I think; the 15 is perfectly drinkable, just not good enough to justify the price over the 12).

Bourbon will naturally be more sweet (corn vs. barley), and you won't get a lot of the oaky and dried leather notes you get with scotches because it's not sitting in the barrel as long. The Scotch you are used to is in the barrel around 12-15 years, I'm sure; WT101 is in around 6-7 now (used to be 8).

God, I miss whiskey right now...

Second glass of WT101 tasted a lot better, maybe it is just a matter of getting used to.

The Redbreast 12 was marvelous, definitely nicer than most Highland and Speyside Scotch of 10-12 years, they often just lack complexity, those need at least 18 years IMO.

Yet I love the younger Islay scotch like Lagavulin 8, Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10.

Going to open the Nikka tomorrow, the Glenfarclas vintage and Lagavulin distillers edition will stay closed for a while

I’ve found bourbon is more likely to evolve with some time after the initial pour, especially with the higher proof bottlings.

For sure. Most bottles benefit from a little exposure to oxygen it seems.

I have found the same with tawny port wine. Not too long but a week later vs first day open seems to be an improvement.

I put my spirit pours through a vinturi to expedite this process but have no idea if it does f#%* all

Nikka WFTB is amazing, one of my favourites. I just add a very small amount of water.

My current favourite single malts are Glendronach 21 Parliament & Nikka from the barrel. I discovered the Glendronach at AP house in February this year.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that loves Johnnie Walker's brands, Black Label particularly.

A friend recommended Hibiki Suntory 12, I will have to try that too. Cheers.

Had the Wild Turkey 101 last night, first venture into Bourbon.

Definitely a lot sweeter than I expected, but not bad. The taste is a bit 'artificial' compared to a fruity / 'sweet' highland Scotches, but I'm not complaining. For €22 it's good value and great for sipping accompanied by some salted peanuts and a bad action movie

Honestly I haven’t even tried wild turkey 101 but there aren’t any artificial flavors added that much I know. From my understanding they wouldn’t be able to label it straight bourbon if they did so. Pretty sure it’s just the corn heavy mash bill.

Budget whiskey here. Well I had some Jack Daniels. Good lord. It tastes like bananas. Literally, a banana flavored spirit. Is this normal? A bad batch maybe? Finished the bottle, but had to have it with ice, which I normally don't do.

Got another bottle of Wild Turkey 101. I'm also normally a scotch person, but the WT101 is a nice change. I also drink it while watching movies. And cooking.
