Frankly I wouldn’t be caught dead in one of those shoddy looking/cheaply made Rolex Explorer I’s. Even the reference number sounds pathetic, doesn’t it? 214270. Ugh. Personally, I think this watch is only suitable for the plebs, the lumpenprole, the penniless dregs of society.

LOL, here I am chillin’ with my “cheapie!”

I think you worry too much what other people think ... Who cares, enjoy your watch...

I love wearing my OLD 1987 Air-King. To me it is priceless and I don't care what people think of it.

The best thing is to remember You are wearing a Rolex, what are they wearing ?!, If the other person is wearing a Rolex ,then they should know better, or are they not appreciating the Brand Rolex and just wearing the watch to show they can buy one. In that case you know, they really have No idea of the brand or the following. You have pride and history in your watch.

An entry level Rolex has the same quality as a Day-Date. It's all about complications and materials.

I never think of Rolex watches in terms of "cheap or entry level".
I tend to think of the less expensive models in terms of 'great value' and the Explorer and Air King models are some of the most attractive models in the range. I aim to take advantage of the great second-hand value of these before I 'hang up the spurs'.

Wore my Explorer I with a suit and tie at work Friday, to the range, to the gym today where the workout included a half mile of swimming, to an Eagle Court of Honor at my son's Boy Scout troop later this afternoon, then to a Jeep club meeting this evening; I'll sleep wearing it tonight, then I'll wear it to church tomorrow, then to my hunting club for the afternoon and early evening working around the camp and then hanging out after dinner at the fire. Monday, I'll be hunting with it and Monday night I'll wear it to a Quiet Birdmen dinner with a sport coat - instead of a customary GMT.

Those Explorer I watches ain't really good for anything else so that's about all I can wear it for now. Cheap junk that they are.

Oh, and wore it whist making this post.

That would be an Air-King probably, not an Explorer.

But no Rolex is cheap per se, a certain model could be entry level to the brand, but who cares.

I own a couple of entry level watches to their brand, and they cost me an arm and a leg!!

All is relative to income...

Rolex Explorers are the epitome of simplistic style and class. I have far more expensive vintage and modern references and plan to add a steel Explorer to my collection as a Christmas present to myself and plan to wear the heck out of it.
It will very likely end up being my favorite daily "beater"... "Cheap Rolex" Really?
Seriously...what's not to love about the timeless class and simplicity of a Rolex Explorer 1 (borrowed picture as I haven't made my purchase yet)?... A true classic that embodies everything great about a Rolex and it's timeless simplicity. End of conversation IMHO.

To be honest it's questions like this that make want to hit my thumb with a hammer.

I'd venture to say the less expensive references have the most history.

Wow, the Explorer just isn't cheap. It's a great rugged watch with style and beauty. The only watches that I'd possibly consider entry level for Rolex are the AK and OP and there's nothing cheap about either. All Rolexes are wonderful watches.

I bought my Explorer 1 to have as a daily wearer. More people have noticed it than either my TT DJ or my ancient blue-linen 1501 Date.

My only question, though, is whether anyone finds that the dial looks like there is condensation on the inside. It has to do with the spacing of the letters.

Coming up: Pepsi GMTII and a Daytona. Then I think I'll be done.

I think that's the intend of the Explorer 1 i.e to fly under radar. Basically, I feel that there are two intend of getting a Rolex 1) You want a good watch with a great history 2) You want a good piece of jewelry. If your intend is the later, I feel that the Explorer 1 is the perfect choice. If your intend is the later, you'll probably need some gold, fancy colored dials, cyclops or even diamonds on your watch.

Unless they are talking about replicas

But back on topic, I love my Explorer 1. Understated, and only people who are into watches know what it is.

If you call $5000 cheap for a watch then I see your point. However I don't call $5000 cheap for a watch.
