Dont believe that a grail is a conscious decision - Its subject to circumstances and perceived preferences at a certain point in time. I like that its obtainable and something that one can work towards and ultimately achieve. Will make it so much sweeter and "precious". My grail is a DD - undecided between a 36 or 40, but guess that I will figure it out along the way |

Cheers, Brian, I remember when I first joined here with just a black sub I spent hours drawing up plans and targets for the years ahead of what I would buy and how I would get the money together and it was so much fun, happiness is in the doing, not the getting they say. And now I am more settled it is satisfying but it isn't half as much fun.

Grail needs to be essentially unobtainable and not solely because of cost.
This, for example, is a holy grail for coin collectors. https://www.foxnews.com/science/holy...ys-lunch-money So I see holy grails as being a SS day date or the rare blue SS submariner... |

My Rolex grail has been a platinum DD for at least the past 5 years. Not a likely future purchase, though I wouldn't say impossible years down the road. We shall see...

I get what you mean, to a point. For me, it would be a piece like one of George Washington’s pocket watches. For a market piece, it’s the PP Aquanaut. Not only is it a stunner, I absolutely love. It’s at a price point I can never justify to myself. So, it’s out of reach. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Should a grail watch (Rolex) be obtainable?
Excellent write up and a great story on obtaining your grail.
I believe everyone has their own varied definition of a grail which results in the term being overused in the watch community as some have alluded to in the thread. Based on exposure to both cultural and pop culture influences, a grail to me is an object that is both elusive and paramount. Therefore something such as a SS Submariner or even a SS Daytona that is fairly attainable simply by paying with either time or coin is no grail. For me, a grail would thus require tremendous effort, reaching milestone accomplishments, and a significant amount of time invested in order to someday achieve. A true grail would have the added condition of being rare. |

Should a grail watch (Rolex) be obtainable?
My idea of a grail is something of very high value, hard to obtain and unique. My Holy grail would be to one day commission the les Cabinotiers at Vacheron constantin to create a unique one off piece for me that I can pass down as an expensive heirloom. It's definitely out of my price range right now but hopefully I can get there in 10 years time. There is just something I like about the unique idea of having an incredible time piece developed specifically for you.
I don't know how to describe it but for example the VC ref 57260 I find to be incredible not only because it is the most complicated watch in existence but that 3 master artisans put 8 years of their lives and soul into that piece. (I'm sure my son would love to inherit a piece from les Cabinotiers as he is only 3 and he already loves looking at and trying on watches even though they're way too big ) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I thought I had a grail watch at some point throughout my quest over the years - but every time I add to the collection and think I have what I ‘want’ (not that I am in any way unsatisfied with my collection) I, always at some point move on go the next one...
I’ve found that for me, the grail is the hunt. My wife put it well one evening at dinner with some great friends. Someone asked her what my favorite watch was...she didn’t miss a BEAT...and quickly said “the next one”. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
